Michael Carrick’s Role in Manchester United’s Future
Michael Carrick has confirmed that he is actively involved in planning for Manchester United’s next season, even though he is still waiting to decide on his own future with the club. Since taking over as head coach following Ruben Amorim’s departure in January, Carrick has made a strong impression and has been instrumental in helping the team regain its footing in the Champions League race.
Despite his current role, Carrick remains uncertain about whether there will be a place for him beyond the current campaign. However, he has received significant support from the players, who recognize his contributions to the team’s recent improvement.
Carrick is already playing a key part in decisions regarding the future of the playing staff. One such decision was the extension of Harry Maguire’s contract, which he helped facilitate alongside chief executive Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox.
“I said it as soon as I came here – I’m part of that and whatever that looks like moving forward, I’m part of that,” Carrick stated. “I’m trying to improve things and make things better all the time. There are conversations in different directions, and I’m definitely part of them. It should be that way anyway, because things need done. So I’m here to take care of that.”
Focus on Immediate Challenges
In the short term, Carrick must concentrate on Monday night’s match against rivals Leeds United. Maguire is suspended for this game, which could lead to a return for Lisandro Martinez in central defense. Martinez has missed five games due to a calf injury but has participated fully in recent training sessions in Ireland. Carrick is currently evaluating how much involvement Martinez will have in the upcoming match.
“We wouldn’t be pushed into anything. That’s a decision we’ll take,” Carrick said. “He’s back training, which is great, and back on the grass. But we’ve got to make the right decision and ensure he’s ready. The next game is always important, but the bigger picture is what matters most.”

Injuries and Recovery Progress
Patrick Dorgu is further along in his recovery than Martinez, but he is still not ready for a return to action. Meanwhile, Matthijs de Ligt did not join the rest of the squad in County Kildare, as he continues to recover from a back injury that has kept him out since November.
“Matta’s not quite at that stage yet,” Carrick explained. “He’s in the gym and doing work, but he’s not on the grass and isn’t ready for that yet. Unfortunately, when you’re injured, you have to go through it, and sometimes it happens quicker than others. Sometimes things don’t go to plan, and it’s a bit slower. He’s just at that stage where he’s working through it at the moment, and we’re trying to get him back right.”

Looking Ahead
As the season progresses, Carrick’s influence on the club’s direction remains evident. His leadership and strategic input have been crucial in shaping the team’s approach both on and off the pitch. While the immediate focus is on the upcoming matches, the long-term vision for Manchester United is being carefully considered by Carrick and the club’s management.
The coming weeks will be critical in determining the team’s trajectory, and Carrick’s continued involvement is expected to play a significant role in shaping the club’s future.
