The Boston Celtics snapped a two-game skid on Saturday night, delivering a dominant 111-100 victory over the visiting Washington Wizards. The win was anchored by a stellar performance from Neemias Queta, who poured in a game-high 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Celtics showcased a balanced offensive attack, with Jayson Tatum contributing a near triple-double effort of 20 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists. Jaylen Brown added 16 points, while Derrick White and Luka Garza, coming off the bench, chipped in with 15 points each. Boston’s superiority in the paint was evident, as they outrebounded the Wizards 55-38, including a significant 19 offensive rebounds that led to second-chance opportunities.
For the Washington Wizards, the loss extended their already concerning losing streak to 11 games. Adding to their woes, they have now dropped nine consecutive road contests. Despite the overall team struggles, forward Tristan Vukcevic provided a bright spot off the bench, converting 6 of his 7 three-point attempts en route to a team-leading 22 points. Jamir Watkins also made an impact as a reserve, tallying 15 points and six rebounds, while Bilal Coulibaly rounded out the Wizards’ double-digit scorers with 12 points. Trae Young dished out six assists to go along with his 11 points. However, rookie Alex Sarr struggled offensively, managing only four points on 1-of-9 shooting from the field.
Early Dominance and Second-Quarter Surge
The Celtics established their presence early, leading by nine points in the opening quarter. However, the Wizards showed resilience, briefly taking a 27-26 lead on a Jamir Watkins three-pointer with just over a minute left in the first. Boston managed to regain the advantage, closing out the first 12 minutes with a 29-27 lead, with Queta already accounting for 13 of those points.
The second quarter saw the Celtics truly assert their control. They ignited the period with a blistering 19-2 run, building a commanding 48-29 advantage with less than five minutes remaining in the first half. Boston’s offensive onslaught continued, outscoring Washington 35-14 in the second quarter alone to establish a substantial 64-41 halftime lead. Queta was instrumental in this surge, shooting an impressive 10-of-12 from the field in the first half for a game-high 22 points at the break.
Maintaining Control in the Second Half
The third quarter saw Boston extend their lead even further. A basket from Jaylen Brown with 5:34 left in the period pushed the Celtics’ advantage to a staggering 83-53. While the Wizards managed to mount a 15-5 run late in the quarter to trim the deficit to 20, Boston maintained a comfortable 93-72 lead heading into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Wizards made a final push. A Vukcevic three-pointer with 4:21 remaining cut the deficit to 12 points. However, the Celtics defense tightened up, and Washington was unable to get any closer than 11 points for the remainder of the game, ultimately sealing Boston’s victory.
The Celtics’ ability to control the tempo, dominate the boards, and execute on offense, particularly in the crucial second quarter, proved to be the difference-maker. Neemias Queta’s efficient scoring and rebounding, coupled with strong contributions from their star players, provided the necessary spark to end their recent losing streak and build momentum for future matchups.
