Chalamet & Jenner’s BAFTA Date Night: A-Listers Shine

The 2026 BAFTA Film Awards have descended upon London, bringing together the crème de la crème of the film industry to celebrate a stellar year of cinematic achievements. From blockbuster epics to intimate dramas, the red carpet at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall was a dazzling showcase of talent and style.

Leading the nominations with a remarkable 14 nods was the action-thriller One Battle After Another, a testament to its widespread critical acclaim and audience appeal. Close behind, with an impressive 13 nominations, was Sinners, a film that has captured the imagination of many. Also vying for top honours were Marty Supreme, widely tipped to secure Timothée Chalamet his first Best Actor Oscar, and the Golden Globe-winning historical drama Hamnet, both boasting 11 nominations each.

This year’s ceremony was expertly helmed by Alan Cumming, taking over hosting duties from David Tennant. Cumming, sporting a distinctive fringed ensemble, guided the proceedings with his characteristic wit and charm, presenting awards to some of the industry’s most recognisable faces.

Couples on the Carpet

The red carpet also provided a platform for celebrity couples to shine. Timothée Chalamet, nominated for his role in Marty Supreme, was seen alongside his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner. The pair, who have been increasingly public with their romance since quietly dating in 2023, have made a notable presence at various awards ceremonies this year, including the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards. While Chalamet graced the carpet in his signature sleek style, Jenner, opting to join him inside, later turned heads with a stunning, low-cut gown adorned with gem detailing. Their public display of affection has fuelled speculation, with recent reports suggesting the couple may be discussing a proposal.

Another couple making a sweet statement was best supporting actor nominee Paul Mescal and his partner Gracie Abrams, who shared a tender moment on the red carpet. Cillian Murphy and his wife, Yvonne McGuinness, also kept their hands clasped, radiating a quiet solidarity. Veteran actor Stellan Skarsgård was accompanied by his wife of 17 years, Megan, while the Hamnet siblings Jacobi and Noah Jupe showcased their brotherly bond.

A Night of Stars and Style

The glamour extended to a host of other notable attendees. Leonardo DiCaprio, nominated for One Battle After Another, arrived looking dapper in his classic white shirt and bow tie. Jessie Buckley, nominated for her role as Agnes in Hamnet, brought a splash of colour to the proceedings in a vibrant electric blue gown. Her portrayal of Shakespeare’s wife has already earned her a Golden Globe, and her BAFTA nomination further cements her status as a rising star.

Musician Jessie Ware opted for a cheerful yellow ensemble, and she later performed a moving rendition of a Barbra Streisand cover during the In Memoriam segment. Kerry Washington, a presenter for the evening, exuded confidence, as did Maura Higgins and Sadie Sink, who both impressed with their red carpet fashion choices. Erin Doherty embraced avant-garde style with a sculptural Louis Vuitton skirt, while Rose Byrne championed a demure pastel yellow trend.

Other familiar faces gracing the event included Kate Hudson, styled by Sophie Lopez and adorned with dazzling Chaumet jewellery, and Emma Stone, showcasing a custom Louis Vuitton creation. The iconic designer Vera Wang, at 76, continued to defy expectations with her ageless appearance, opting for dramatic sunglasses and a high-fashion look.

Tributes and Royal Presence

The evening also held moments of remembrance and reflection. Patrick Dempsey attended with his daughter Talula, offering a brave smile just days after the passing of his Grey’s Anatomy co-star, Eric Dane. Dempsey shared heartfelt tributes to Dane, remembering him as the “funniest man” and a source of immense “joy.”

The Prince of Wales, BAFTA’s president since 2010, was accompanied by the Princess of Wales, marking their first joint appearance at the ceremony in three years. This public outing also comes in the wake of recent events concerning Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

Musical Performances and Industry Insights

The ceremony was further enlivened by a captivating musical performance from Jae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, who voiced the group Huntr/X in KPop Demon Hunters. The trio delivered a powerful rendition of the hit song “Golden,” and are set to perform at the Brit Awards next weekend.

BAFTA chairwoman Sara Putt spoke optimistically about the UK film industry, describing it as a “glorious” year with a “fabulous” selection of films. She highlighted the diverse range of nominees, spanning British, Irish, and international talent across all aspects of filmmaking. The sheer variety, from acclaimed dramas to major blockbusters like One Battle After Another and Marty Supreme, underscored a prosperous year for cinema.

Host Alan Cumming, in a conversation with the New York Times, shared his approach to hosting. He emphasised the importance of humour, a touch of biting wit, and a willingness to acknowledge the prevailing global mood. Cumming noted that many of this year’s films, including Hamnet, One Battle After Another, and Sentimental Value, evoked a sense of “constant anxiety,” but ultimately, the focus was on celebrating creativity.
