Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad finally felt relief after his team secured a strong 23-run victory against Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 11. Defending a total of 212 runs, the CSK bowlers managed to restrict Delhi Capitals to 189 runs, with Lungi Ngidi falling on the final ball.
The win was largely thanks to Sanju Samson’s outstanding unbeaten innings of 115 off 56 balls, which propelled Chennai to 212/2 after they chose to bat first. Ayush Mhatre contributed 59 off 36 before retiring out in the 18th over, while Shivam Dube’s late 20 not out off 10 deliveries ensured the innings maintained its momentum. On the Delhi side, Axar Patel was the only wicket-taker, dismissing Gaikwad for 15 during the powerplay.
Delhi’s chase started strongly but quickly lost its rhythm
Delhi Capitals began their innings at a brisk pace, reaching 61 within five overs thanks to Pathum Nissanka’s 41 off 24 and KL Rahul’s 18 off 10. However, their momentum slowed down significantly once Anshul Kamboj dismissed Nissanka and Gurjapneet Singh removed Axar Patel for just 1 in his first over.
Sameer Rizvi fell soon after, and Jamie Overton’s spell in the middle overs proved crucial in shifting the game’s balance. The England all-rounder took three wickets for 18 runs from four overs, removing David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, and Auqib Nabi. Despite Stubbs’ aggressive 60 off 38, Delhi found themselves needing too many runs after losing several wickets between overs 12 and 16.
CSK wrapped up the match with a clinical performance with the ball and field
In addition to their impressive fielding efforts, Chennai’s bowling remained disciplined despite Delhi’s occasional bursts of scoring. Kamboj took two wickets in the death overs, finishing with figures of 3 for 35, including the dismissals of Kuldeep Yadav and Ngidi. Overton’s control in the middle overs was the highlight of the innings, while Noor Ahmad added to the pressure by taking Ashutosh Sharma’s wicket as Delhi threatened a late surge.
Delhi were also affected by 15 extras, including 11 wides, which briefly kept them in the game but never shifted the pressure back onto Chennai. The innings came to an end at 189 in exactly 20 overs, with Ngidi caught by Gurjapneet Singh off the final delivery, securing a comprehensive home victory for Chennai. This win was built on a strong batting performance and a composed bowling display that sealed the outcome decisively.
