Chery’s Lepas Sub-brand Unveils Affordable Electric SUV for Australia
Chery’s new sub-brand, Lepas, is making waves in the Australian automotive market with its latest offering, the L4 EV. This electric vehicle was recently showcased at the Beijing Motor Show and marks the brand’s most affordable electric car to date. The L4 EV is positioned as a more budget-friendly alternative to premium European all-electric small SUVs like the BMW iX1, Volvo EX30, and the upcoming Mercedes GLA. It will be available alongside a plug-in hybrid version and will sit below the larger L6 and L8 models, which are expected to rival the Toyota RAV4.
The L4 EV shares many design elements with the new-generation Chery Tiggo 5, which has already been unveiled in China. While the PHEV and combustion versions look almost identical, the EV version features a more aerodynamic front bumper, updated alloy wheels, and subtle interior modifications.
Key Features of the Lepas L4 EV
Measuring approximately 4415mm in length, 1817mm in width, and standing 1630mm tall, the L4 EV boasts a generous 2700mm wheelbase. This is about 70mm longer than the Chery E5, offering more interior space. The L4 EV is the first model built on Chery’s new LEX platform, which is known for its high rigidity and ability to accommodate advanced technology. The platform also benefits from input from Chery’s R&D hub, resulting in a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension system.
Looking ahead, Chery aims to develop cars that offer European-tuned suspension. Once this is achieved, the brand plans to tailor the ride and handling for specific markets like Australia. The Lepas L4 is designed to appeal to a more upscale buyer with its European-inspired aesthetics and higher-grade interiors. However, it is unlikely to carry the premium pricing of brands like BMW or Benz. Instead, it is expected to undercut competitors such as the BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA.

Performance and Technology
From launch, Australian buyers will miss out on the base 80kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and the more powerful 108kW 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. Instead, they will be offered the all-electric version unveiled in Beijing. This model is powered by a single 150kW front e-motor that draws power from a 67kWh battery, delivering brisk performance and an estimated range of 450km.
A second plug-in hybrid variant will also be available at launch. This model produces 205kW and 350Nm of torque, with an undisclosed battery capacity but up to 90km of EV range according to the WLTP test cycle.
Interior and Standard Features
Inside the L4 EV, the cabin is equipped with an 8.0-inch instrument cluster and a larger 9.9-inch infotainment screen. Standard features include a 360-degree camera view, parking sensors, automatic headlights, and half-leather seats. Higher-grade models in some markets come with additional features such as roof rails, keyless entry, a premium sound system, six-way power adjustable heated and ventilated seats, and adaptive cruise control.
Strategic Positioning and Pricing
While the long-term goal is to position the Lepas brand as a serious competitor to BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the initial strategy involves a five per cent price premium over Omoda and Jaecoo models. This approach is intended to build sufficient volume to sustain the brand. It is expected that Lepas Australia will release full details of the incoming L4 EV and the larger L6 and L8 models closer to their launch, including information on trims and powertrains available to Australian consumers.
