Bulldogs’ Approach to Developing Young Talent
Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo has taken a measured approach when it comes to managing the expectations of promising young player Mitchell Woods. Woods, who has long been seen as a potential future halfback for the club, is part of a complex decision-making process that the Bulldogs’ coaching team must navigate in the coming years.
Currently, Matt Burton plays as five-eighth, while Lachlan Galvin holds the halfback position. However, there has been ongoing discussion about whether Galvin might be better suited to play in the No.6 jersey. This situation highlights the challenges faced by the club as they look to build a strong and competitive team.
A Focus on Competition and Development
Ciraldo addressed the topic during an appearance on Nine’s 100% Footy, where he was asked how the club would handle the situation and whether there was any interest in moving Burton to the centres. “Mitch is a great young kid; I love coaching him. He’s just footy obsessed, but he’s 19, and he’s still got a little bit of an apprenticeship to go,” he said.
Woods has experienced some setbacks this pre-season due to injuries. Despite this, Ciraldo emphasized that the club believes in his potential and is committed to seeing him develop into a first-grade player. “We know he’s going to be a first grader. We love that he’s at the Bulldogs, but we’re not going to rush him ever.”
The Importance of Building a Strong Club
The coach also highlighted the value of having competition for spots within the team. “What I love is we have competition for spots, and we’ve got a reserve grade full of NRL players down there that are pushing for spots. While ever you’ve got that, it helps build a strong club.”
This philosophy underscores the importance of nurturing talent from within and ensuring that players are given the time and support needed to reach their full potential. It also reflects the club’s commitment to maintaining a strong foundation for future success.

Mitchell Woods: A Promising Future
Woods has been a highly touted junior since making the decision to join the Bulldogs in 2024, choosing rugby league over potential careers in AFL or rugby union. His talent and dedication have made him a key figure in the club’s development plans.
As a two-time NSW U19s representative, Woods has already shown promise on the field. He is currently contracted with the Bulldogs until the end of 2027, which gives the club time to continue developing his skills and preparing him for a future role in the first-grade team.
Looking Ahead
With the upcoming Good Friday clash against the Rabbitohs, the Bulldogs will have an opportunity to showcase their progress and test their strategies on the field. The focus remains on building a strong, competitive team that can succeed in the NRL.
By taking a patient and strategic approach to player development, the Bulldogs aim to create a sustainable path for young talents like Woods to thrive. This careful planning ensures that the club remains competitive while also investing in its future.
