Citizen’s arrest stops tiny home thief on Sunshine Coast

A Citizen’s Arrest in Queensland

A jujitsu black belt holder has made headlines after pulling off a dramatic citizen’s arrest of a man accused of stealing a tiny home on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The incident highlights the power of community involvement and quick thinking in addressing criminal activity.

The Missing Tiny Homes

On Sunday morning, two tiny homes were reported missing from a rural property in Cooran. This event sparked concern among local residents and authorities, as the theft of such valuable assets is not common in the area. The loss of these homes left many wondering about their whereabouts and who might be responsible for their disappearance.

A Chance Encounter

Later that day, about 50 kilometres south in Bli Bli, Eduardo Giraldes was riding his electric skateboard when he noticed a tiny home on a trailer parked on a nearby street. This sighting piqued his curiosity, and he decided to investigate further. Upon returning home, Mr. Giraldes came across a social media post appealing for help to find the allegedly stolen tiny homes, which closely resembled the one he had seen on the street.

Taking Action

Mr. Giraldes and his friend Diego Sanches Nogueira decided to take matters into their own hands. They approached the driver of the vehicle, but the man attempted to start the car and drive away. In response, they used their own car to block him from leaving, ensuring that he could not escape the situation.

Jujitsu Skills in Action

Mr. Giraldes was not convinced by the man’s claims that he had bought the tiny home, so he called the police. He explained, “We’re just holding the guy saying, ‘Man, you’re not going to move.'” With both men weighing over 100 kilograms, they were physically capable of restraining the suspect if necessary.

“I trained [in] jujitsu for over 13 years already. I knew if something happened, I knew how to hold him,” Mr. Giraldes said. “I think he knew that he didn’t have any chance and he didn’t try.”

Police Involvement

When officers arrived, they questioned the man before arresting him. Subsequent investigations led police to find the second missing tiny home at an address in Tewantin. The man has been charged with one count of stealing the tiny home and one count of stealing the trailer. He will appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates’ Court in May.

Ongoing Investigations

Investigations are continuing into the alleged theft of the second tiny home. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the police. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in solving crimes.

A Satisfying Experience

Mr. Giraldes shared that it felt satisfying to help out. “My girlfriend is always making fun of me, that I always stop to help people, like change tyres and those kind of things,” he said. “But this was another level for sure, and it feels pretty good.”

This incident showcases the positive impact that individuals can have when they choose to act responsibly and take action in times of need. It also emphasizes the value of community support and the role that everyday citizens can play in maintaining public safety.
