Clash of Clans Boss to Win BAFTA Fellowship in Ireland

Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen to Receive Bafta Fellowship

Supercell’s CEO and co-founder, Ilkka Paananen, is set to be honored with the prestigious Bafta Fellowship this month. This award recognizes individuals who have made a significant impact on the games industry. Paananen joins an elite group of recipients that includes notable figures such as Shigeru Miyamoto and Gabe Newell.

The announcement comes ahead of the Bafta Games Awards, which will take place at London’s Southbank Centre on April 17. While the event is expected to celebrate several titles, one particular game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is likely to dominate the ceremony with a total of 12 nominations. However, there is one award that this role-playing game will not be winning.

Paananen co-founded Supercell in 2010, a company that has since become renowned for its popular mobile games, including Clash Of Clans, Clash Royale, and Brawl Stars. In 2016, the Finnish developer was acquired by Tencent for a staggering €8.4 billion (£7.3 billion).

Beyond his work with Supercell, Paananen established the Ilkka Paananen Foundation in 2015. The foundation focuses on improving social and mental well-being among children, young people, and families, partly through the development of educational games.

Previous recipients of the Bafta Fellowship within the games industry include a wide range of influential figures, such as Shuhei Yoshida, Siobhan Reddy, Hideo Kojima, Tim Schafer, David Braben, Yoko Shimomura, Peter Molyneux, and Will Wright.

A Significant Achievement

Receiving the Bafta Fellowship is a major milestone for Paananen. “Looking at the names of previous Fellows, I see so many of my personal heroes – people whose work has inspired me and who I continue to look up to,” he said. “Being included in their company is something I never could have imagined.”

Paananen also emphasized the importance of the team he has worked with over the years. “Throughout my career, I have been extremely fortunate. But my greatest fortune, by far, has been the privilege of working with amazingly talented and passionate game developers over the past 25 years. They are the ones who create the magic. This award truly belongs to each and every one of them.”
