Sydney’s Triumph Over Gold Coast
Sydney coach Dean Cox has praised “phenomenal” Isaac Heeney following the Swans’ impressive 32-point victory over Gold Coast, which secured their position at the top of the AFL ladder. The match, played at Norwood Oval, saw the Swans demonstrate their superiority despite some wasteful moments.
The final score was 14.16 (100) to 9.14 (68), with Heeney playing a crucial role in the win. His performance included two goals and 12 score involvements, along with 33 disposals, 538 metres gained, 10 clearances, 11 tackles, and 18 contested possessions.
Cox expressed his admiration for Heeney, stating:
“I just can’t ever question what he does on the football field. His effort’s phenomenal, his attention to detail, and he performs on the biggest stage as often as anyone does and that’s why he’s the player that he is. He was phenomenal again tonight, really tough and uncompromising. He leads from the front and drags people along with him, and also when you’re trying to set standards and the way you want to play, he epitomises that better than any.”

Heeney was pleased with the team’s performance and his own contributions. He noted:
“It was nice to contribute for four quarters and have an impact and use the ball really well. I think my pressure was all right too, which was nice.”
His efforts were supported by Chad Warner, who scored two goals and had 22 disposals, and Justin McInerney, who recorded 26 disposals. James Jordon also played a key role by limiting Noah Anderson’s impact.

Brodie Grundy, the ruckman, had a strong game with 20 disposals, 12 tackles, 36 hitouts, and seven clearances, overpowering Jarrod Witts and Mac Andrew. Charlie Curnow contributed with 0.4, while Tom Papley and Malcolm Rosas Jnr added three and two goals respectively.
The Swans dominated the air, taking 10 contested marks compared to the Suns’ zero. Despite this, Ben Long managed to kick three goals, but the Suns fell to 3-2.

Damien Hardwick acknowledged the gap between his team and the top sides, stating:
“Contest-wise, they were just cleaner and clearer around the contest than us and they got away. I think contested ball and tackle numbers paint a story. They’re playing some really, really good footy and the fact of the matter is there’s a gap between us and those sides at the moment.”
Callum Mills suffered a knee injury in the first quarter but continued to play. Sydney maintained a lead throughout the game, with Max King’s second goal bringing the Suns within 10 points late in the third quarter. However, the Swans eventually extended their lead for a decisive win.
The Swans are set to face GWS in their next match, marking another exciting chapter in their season.
