Essendon’s Historic Win and the Road Ahead
After a 45-point victory over Melbourne, Essendon coach Brad Scott is urging the club to keep things in perspective. The win came at Adelaide Oval on Saturday, where the Bombers secured a 17.11 (113) to 10.8 (68) triumph, ending a 17-game winless streak. A loss would have marked the longest losing streak in the club’s history.

Scott emphasized that the team has not focused on the streak during training. “We haven’t mentioned it once,” he said. The victory was driven by strong performances from players like Archie Roberts, who recorded 42 disposals and one goal, Darcy Parish with 33 touches, and Zach Merrett, who had 31 disposals and one goal. The Bombers dominated the second half, scoring 11 goals compared to just two from Melbourne.
“It’s satisfying, that’s for sure,” Scott said. “Sometimes, the reality is you just need some reward for the effort.”

He acknowledged the difficulty of seeing progress when results aren’t coming. “Because it’s hard to see the positive progress and the things moving in the right direction when you’re not getting the result.”
Despite the win, Scott stressed the importance of maintaining perspective. “I’m really pleased for the players to get that reward,” he said. “I’m really pleased for our supporters, who have been through a really tough time, I’m really pleased for the club.”

“But perspective is important. It’s not like we have done anything miraculous, so we have still got a hell of a lot of work to do.”
Melbourne’s first-year coach, Steven King, echoed similar sentiments about the need for improvement after the team suffered its second loss in five games. “When you’re lethargic and not quite at your sharpest, every phase of the game is difficult,” King said. “I just bring it back to: how unconditional are we with being ruthless, selfless and connected with one another in the game?”

“And that’s the foundation of our game, that’s how I want us to be known as a footy club, and we lowered our colours in that today.”
Essendon’s Isaac Kako, Archer May, Nate Caddy, Tom Edwards, and Xavier Duursma each kicked two goals, while Melbourne’s Kysaiah Pickett managed two goals and 28 disposals. However, teammate Christian Salem suffered an ankle injury.
The match started with Melbourne taking an early lead, holding a 3.5 to 3.1 advantage at the end of the first quarter, highlighted by a classy goal from Latrelle Pickett. Melbourne extended their lead by 19 points 22 minutes into the second term, but Essendon made a crucial comeback, scoring two late goals to reduce the halftime deficit to just six points.
The Bombers then took control in the third term, capitalizing on midfield dominance to score six goals to one. In the final quarter, they sealed the victory with four goals in a six-minute period, sparked by a stunning snap from near the boundary line by former skipper Zach Merrett.
