Discover the Magic of Greater Palm Springs
If you’re looking for a destination that offers more than just a vacation, Greater Palm Springs is the perfect place to explore. From its stunning natural landscapes to its vibrant cultural scene and luxurious accommodations, this region has something for everyone. Whether you’re a fan of music festivals, architecture, or simply relaxing in a spa, there’s no shortage of things to do in this unique part of California.
Unwind in Desert Hot Springs
One of the nine cities that make up Greater Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs is renowned for its naturally occurring hot mineral springs. These springs have been cherished by the Cahuilla people for centuries due to their healing properties. Visitors can take a soak in these world-class springs, relax by the pool, or indulge in a massage that will leave you feeling completely rejuvenated.
During my visit, I had the pleasure of staying at Two Bunch Palms, an adults-only wellness resort that truly embodies tranquility. After a balancing massage and a soak in the outdoor natural spring baths, I felt like I was in a state of pure relaxation — almost as if I were Gwyneth Paltrow herself.
Other premium options in the area include The JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa, Azure Palm Hot Springs, The Spring Resort & Spa, and Hope Springs Resort. Each of these destinations offers a unique blend of luxury and relaxation.
Take Up Horse Riding
Greater Palm Springs is also known for its breathtaking natural scenery, and one of the best ways to experience it is by horseback riding. Smoke Tree Stables offers family-owned horseback rides through the historic Agua Caliente Indian Canyons, including Murray Canyon. You’ll ride along streams and through iconic native Palm Groves, making for a memorable adventure.
Crazy Horse Ranch and Coyote Ridge Stable also provide horseback riding tours and lessons, with some even offering moonlit excursions through Morongo Valley. It’s a fantastic way to see the beauty of the desert under the stars.
Enjoy Architecture Tours with a Twist
Palm Springs is a hub for mid-century modern architecture, home to designs by renowned architects such as Albert Frey, William Krisel, and Donald Wexler. One of the highlights of my visit was the opportunity to tour the Frey House II as part of the Palm Springs Art Museum’s Modern Tour. The house is in pristine condition and offers a glimpse into the architectural influence of this iconic style.
In addition to the official tours, there are also events like Modernism Week in February and October, as well as self-guided Saturday Tours that are open for the next few months. These tours provide an excellent opportunity to learn about the history and significance of this architectural movement.
For those who enjoy pop culture, the Drag & Fly Tour is a must-try. This unique travel experience allows you to see celebrity homes in the area while enjoying a show-stopping performance by Anita Doll, a former journalist turned drag queen. The tour features luxury seating and a giant picture window, making it a fun and informative way to explore the region.
Stargazing in Joshua Tree National Park
As a self-proclaimed fan of the cosmos, I was thrilled to go on a stargazing tour with Joshua Tree Astronomy Adventures. The two-hour tour took me deep into the national park, where we used top-of-the-line telescopes to view planets, galaxies, and nebulae. With a cap of 10 guests, the experience was intimate and educational, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn about the night sky.
Even my cracked iPhone couldn’t capture the true beauty of what we saw through the telescopes. It was a highlight of my trip and a must-do for anyone visiting the area.
Embrace the Local Culture
Greater Palm Springs is rich in cultural experiences, from murals to museums. The Coachella Walls project features a collection of murals in the Pueblo Viejo District, celebrating the history and culture of the local Latinx community. The project, launched by Armando Lerma and curator Medvin Sobio, includes 19 beautiful works of art that are free to view.
The Palm Springs Art Museum is another great stop, with exhibits exploring LGBTQ-identified artists, the works of Ynez Johnston, and the concept of art through its ‘Art Foundations’ exhibit. The Agua Caliente Cultural Museum is also worth visiting, as it provides insight into the history of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and Cahuilla culture.
Stroll Through Sunnylands Center and Gardens
Sunnylands, the former Annenberg Estate in Rancho Mirage, is a historic site that has played a significant role in American politics and architecture. The estate, once the home of Ambassadors Walter and Leonore Annenberg, has hosted US presidents and world leaders since 1966. It’s also a beautiful place to explore, with a main house, guest quarters, a private golf course, and 13 man-made lakes.
Visitors can take a tour of the historic house, enjoy a guided walk of the gardens, or take an open-air shuttle across the 200-acre estate. The property is a testament to the grandeur and elegance of the Annenbergs.
Don’t Forget the Nightlife
No visit to Greater Palm Springs would be complete without experiencing its vibrant nightlife. Red Barn in Palm Desert is a chic dive bar with a great DJ, dance floor, and delicious cocktails. Hunters offers go-go dancers and drag performances, while Toucans Tiki Lounge is a great spot for themed nights and more drag.
For a more relaxed evening, Rosemary Hi-Fi in Indio is a natural wine listening bar that combines great tunes with delicious drops. Seymours, an intimate speakeasy inside Mr. Lyons, is another must-visit for cocktail lovers.
