Cody Linley: Hannah Montana Star Unrecognizable Two Decades Later

From Teen Heartthrob to Behind the Camera: Cody Linley Reflects on His Hannah Montana Legacy

For a generation of young viewers, Cody Linley will forever be etched in their memories as Jake Ryan, Miley Cyrus’s charming, if sometimes wayward, love interest on the hit Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. Back in 2006, Linley’s portrayal of the character catapulted him into the spotlight, instantly making him a crush for millions. Now, nearly two decades later, the actor, who is 36, has opened up about his time on the beloved show, revealing how he feels about its enduring impact and how his own career has evolved.

Appearing on the Reel Appreciation podcast, Linley took a nostalgic trip down memory lane, reflecting on his significant role in shaping the childhoods of many. His tenure on Hannah Montana spanned 10 episodes, but the impact was anything but fleeting. Linley’s good looks and engaging persona quickly cemented his status as a teen sensation.

“At that age, I was just showing up and doing my best to tell the truth in the scenes,” Linley shared with podcast hosts Maria Elizabeth Darnell and David Clair-Bennett. “So knowing that years later I’m still a part of people’s memories is an honour.” He described the feeling of being a significant part of so many people’s childhoods as “humbling and surreal.”

While the piercing green eyes and a handsome smile remain, the actor’s appearance has naturally transformed from his Disney Channel days. The sweeping blond locks that characterised Jake Ryan have been replaced by shorter, cropped brown hair, signalling a clear shift from his youthful heartthrob image.

Linley admitted that he doesn’t see himself as a celebrity, which makes the continued recognition as Jake Ryan all the more remarkable. “I’m just a regular guy,” he stated. “And so if I ever get recognised as Jake Ryan, it’s a mind-boggling experience.” He expressed his gratitude for being part of a show that has “stood the test of time nearly two decades later and has made an impact on people and is still a crucial part of their life.” This enduring connection, he believes, highlights the “power of film” and fuels his current passion for filmmaking. “Stories can make a huge impact on people and be life-changing. It certainly was for me to be a part of it. I’m honoured.”

The Road to Hannah Montana

Linley also shared an interesting anecdote about how he landed the iconic role. His mother, an acting coach, had previously worked with Miley Cyrus before her audition for Hannah Montana. This prior connection proved beneficial during the crucial chemistry read for the show.

“I got to meet her at our apartment when they worked together and she was very kind,” Linley recalled. “Then I got an audition for the same show about a month or two later… Then I went in for a callback and I had the chemistry read with Miley. It seemed to work out well.”

What began as a guest star role with the possibility of recurring appearances quickly blossomed. “It ended up turning into a dozen episodes over four seasons,” Linley explained. “I had no idea that it was going to turn into what it did and I’m so glad I was a part of it.” He described his time on the show as “very special.”

A Shared Journey with Miley Cyrus

Linley spoke fondly of his experience growing up alongside Miley Cyrus on set. “We both grew up on set together, so we had that shared experience, and I support her,” he gushed. He expressed admiration for Cyrus’s ability to constantly reinvent herself while remaining authentic. “Now she’s got a couple of Grammys. She’s amazing and she always was extremely talented.”

Looking ahead, Linley expressed enthusiasm for the possibility of reprising his role as Jake Ryan in a Hannah Montana reboot. When asked what his character might be doing today, he mused, “Maybe he would be directing like I’m doing.” However, he admitted a touch of scepticism about whether Jake and Miley’s characters would have stayed together, referencing their famously complicated romance which ended after Jake’s infidelity. “Jake did her dirty in the end,” he joked. “I’m just going to leave it up to fans’ speculation on that one. It was a bittersweet ending.”

Beyond Hannah Montana: A Diverse Career

Before his Hannah Montana fame, Linley appeared in a variety of films, including My Dog Skip, Where the Heart Is, Walker, Texas Ranger, Miss Congeniality, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Hoot. The role of Jake Ryan, however, undeniably marked his breakthrough into superstardom.

Following his time on the Disney show, Linley continued to build his acting resume with roles in the horror film Forget Me Not, the series Melissa & Joey, the 2012 drama The Playroom, and the Sharknado franchise, appearing in Sharknado: The 4th Awakens and Sharknado 5: Global Swarming. He also showcased his dancing prowess, competing in the 2008 season of Dancing With the Stars alongside Julianne Hough, where they achieved a respectable fourth-place finish.

Currently, Cody Linley is channeling his creative energy into directing. He has two short films in development that he has both written and directed, signalling an exciting new chapter in his multifaceted career.
