Mr. Beasley admitted that the turnout was unexpected. He stated that the event was shut down by police after just 57 minutes. “We didn’t expect this many people to show up,” he said. “It’s completely fair enough that they came and shut it down.”
Victoria Police confirmed that officers arrived at the Liberty service station around 7:30 am to assist with traffic management. A spokeswoman for the department explained that Leakes Rd became heavily congested due to the promotion, which involved the distribution of free fuel.
“Police established several hazards due to the increased traffic and engaged event organisers,” she said. “Organisers worked with police and established an alternative way to run the promotion, which is understood to be in the form of vouchers that can be used later.”
Despite the efforts to manage the situation, four police units remained on scene for three hours to address the risks associated with the heavy traffic. The incident highlights the potential dangers of large-scale promotions that attract crowds without proper planning or crowd control measures.
