Dan Levy breaks down talking about Schitt’s Creek’s future after Catherine O’Hara’s passing

Emotional Reflections on the Future of Schitt’s Creek

Dan Levy, the actor known for his role as David Rose in the beloved Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek, recently broke down in tears while discussing the future of the show following the passing of his co-star Catherine O’Hara. The emotional moment occurred during an appearance on CBS News’ Sunday Morning, where he and reporter Anthony Mason visited Ontario, Canada, the location where the show was filmed.

Schitt’s Creek first aired on CBC Television in 2015 and ran for six seasons, concluding in 2020 with a total of 80 episodes. The show gained a massive following and became a cultural phenomenon, largely due to its heartfelt storytelling and the chemistry between the cast members.

During the interview, Anthony asked Dan if there was any possibility of a sequel. Dan responded with a firm ‘No. Not now. You can’t.’ This statement was met with a wave of emotion from the actor, who then put his head in his arm to try and cover his face. A teary-eyed Dan continued, saying, ‘I didn’t think that I’d have quite an emotional reaction.’

When asked what he was feeling, Dan explained, ‘Just a lot of memories. A lot of memories with Catherine.’ He added, ‘It’s what you have to hold on to, is the memories of it all.’ His words resonated deeply with fans, many of whom took to Instagram to share their own reactions to the clip.

Fans expressed their grief and admiration for both Dan and Catherine, with one comment reading, ‘”Not now” destroyed me. I’ll be bawling in the corner for a bit now.’ Another fan wrote, ‘Cried when Dan cried.’ Many others echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the unique and irreplaceable nature of Schitt’s Creek.

The outpouring of love and support for Catherine was evident, with fans expressing how much she will be missed. One comment read, ‘There will never be another Schitt’s Creek. It was one of a kind.’ Another fan said, ‘I teared up when he said not now bc I know why not now.’ The emotional impact of the conversation was clear, with many fans sharing how they felt the loss alongside Dan.

Earlier this month, Dan shared how he has been coping with the loss of Catherine, whom he referred to as ‘the great queen.’ During an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, Dan reflected on the painful loss of his on-screen mother. He described the experience as a ‘collective loss’ and emphasized how special Catherine was. ‘She was the greatest. She’s irreplaceable,’ he told Jimmy, adding, ‘Unbelievably talented at improvising. One of the great, great, great, great queens.’

Fallon praised Catherine’s comedic talent, stating, ‘She was one of the funniest comedians I’ve ever seen. Can do characters … Gorgeous.’ Dan agreed, highlighting her versatility and the deep connection she had with the audience.

The comfort Dan found in seeing how loved Catherine was by fans and colleagues was significant. ‘The great comfort for me has just been to see how loved she was, you know what I mean? The outpouring. Everyone felt like they kind of knew her,’ he said.

Dan’s real-life father, Eugene Levy, played Johnny Rose, Catherine’s husband in the show, and Annie Murphy portrayed their daughter, Alexis Rose. Eugene shared a heartfelt statement after Catherine’s passing, expressing his deep sorrow and the long-standing relationship he had with her. ‘Words seem inadequate to express the loss I feel today. I had the honor of knowing and working with the great Catherine O’Hara for over fifty years. From our beginnings on the Second City stage, to SCTV, to the movies we did with Chris Guest, to our six glorious years on Schitt’s Creek, I cherished our working relationship, but most of all our friendship. And I will miss her. My heart goes out to Bo, Matthew, Luke, and the entire O’Hara family.’

Catherine O’Hara, known for her roles in Schitt’s Creek, Home Alone, and Best in Show, passed away at the age of 71. A statement from CAA, her agency, mentioned that she died at her home in Los Angeles following a brief illness. Although the cause of death has not been officially released, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson confirmed that emergency services were called to her residence early in the morning.
