Danone invests in bottled water as health trends change drinks

Consumer Health Awareness Driving Shift to Bottled Water

In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in consumer preferences towards healthier options, particularly in the UK and France. This change has significantly impacted the beverage market, with many consumers moving away from sugary drinks and opting for bottled water instead. As a result, Danone, a leading French consumer goods company, has seen an increase in sales of its well-known brands such as Evian.

This trend is not limited to Danone alone. Major food companies like Nestle and Unilever have also experienced challenges over the past decade due to the growing demand for fresher and less sweet products. The rise of GLP-1 weight loss drugs in Europe and the United States has further accelerated this shift, encouraging more people to prioritize their health and hydration.

Growth in the Bottled-Water Market

The European bottled-water market, valued at 18 billion euros, saw significant growth last year, with a 5% increase in value and a 3% rise in volume. This was the fastest growth rate in recent years, according to Antoine Portmann, managing director of Danone Waters Europe. France experienced a 7% growth in value, while the UK saw a 9% increase.

Portmann highlighted that the primary driver behind this growth is the increasing awareness among consumers about the importance of healthy hydration. He believes this trend will continue in the long term.

Despite the positive growth, it is important to note that in some markets, sugary drinks still dominate. In 2023, water sales reached 4.85 billion euros, which accounted for less than a fifth of Danone’s total revenue. Globally, water sales increased by 1.9%, and in Europe, they rose by 3.3%.

On-the-Go Consumption and Busy Lifestyles

Another factor contributing to the growth of bottled water sales is the busy lifestyles of modern consumers. With less time for sit-down meals, many people are turning to convenient, on-the-go options. This includes carrying water with them throughout the day.

Portmann explained that this shift is helping to boost sales. “They go for options that they can eat on-the-go, and each time they will need to carry some water with them,” he said.

Investments in Water Brands

To meet the growing demand, Danone is making significant investments in its water brands. The company has committed 20 million euros to upgrade its Evian bottling facility and an additional 8 million euros to preserve its Evian, Volvic, Badoit, and La Salvetat sites.

This strategic move comes at a time when rival company Nestle is considering selling a 50% stake in its water unit, which includes popular brands like Perrier and San Pellegrino.

Conclusion

The shift towards healthier consumption habits, combined with the convenience of on-the-go options, is reshaping the beverage industry. As consumers become more aware of their health and hydration needs, the demand for bottled water continues to grow. Danone’s investments in its water brands reflect the company’s confidence in this trend and its commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its customers.
