Dax Shepard Speaks Out on Kristen Bell’s Controversial Anniversary Post
Dax Shepard has finally shared his perspective on the controversy that surrounded his wife, Kristen Bell, after she posted a wedding anniversary message that sparked significant backlash. Six months after the incident was labeled as “tone deaf,” Shepard opened up about the situation during an episode of his podcast, Armchair Expert, featuring comedian Nikki Glaser.
“I was alerted by someone that this whole thing was happening,” Shepard recalled. “I didn’t know, and Kristen knew through her publicist but didn’t tell me. So, I actually didn’t know, and this was brought to my attention.”
The actor and comedian was unaware of the controversy for a week and a half before someone finally informed him. “I was like, ‘What are you [talking about]?’ And then I had to go to Kristen, like, ‘What are they talking about?’ She’s like, ‘Oh, that post I had,'” he said.
The Origin of the Controversy
The drama began when Bell, 45, shared a wedding anniversary tribute on Instagram in October 2025. Her post included a quote from Shepard: “Happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who once said to me: ‘I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would,❤️’.”
While some fans interpreted the caption as a joke, others found it deeply problematic. The National Network to End Domestic Violence even criticized the post, stating, “There’s nothing funny about domestic violence ‘jokes’ that trivialise the very real fear, trauma and pain that millions of victims and survivors face each day.”
They added, “Especially during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we all have a responsibility to support victims and survivors, to invest in proven solutions and to speak about this issue with the seriousness it deserves.”
Kristen Bell’s Response
Despite the backlash, Bell has never directly addressed the controversy. In the aftermath, she reduced her public appearances, skipping a segment on the US Today show and limiting her social media activity.
Months later, she expressed her admiration for Shepard while preparing to host the SAG’s 2026 Actor Awards in March. “There’s nothing that he won’t do to take care of me,” she said. “One thing that I love so much about being married to him is that he is never allergic to me shining more and more. He never gets insecure about it.”
Conclusion
The incident highlights the importance of sensitivity when discussing serious issues like domestic violence. While Bell’s intentions may have been lighthearted, the response from the public and advocacy groups underscores the need for greater awareness and respect in how such topics are approached, especially in the public eye.
