Rising Star in the AFL: Finn O’Sullivan’s Remarkable Journey
Melbourne Demons Team of the Century member Garry Lyon has praised young North Melbourne midfielder, Finn O’Sullivan, for his outstanding performances on the field. O’Sullivan has recently made headlines after successfully containing Essendon’s key player, Zach Merrett, in a recent match. His commitment to this task, combined with his ability to consistently find the ball, has drawn comparisons to one of the game’s greatest captains.
Lyon believes that O’Sullivan’s selfless leadership and dedication mirror those of Hawthorn legend Luke Hodge. “Finn O’Sullivan is as close to Luke Hodge as it gets… he’s 19, but he looks to me like he’s got Hodge qualities. No bulldust,” Lyon said during an interview with SEN.
A Team-First Mindset
Lyon also highlighted O’Sullivan’s team-first approach, which he described as rare among players at North Melbourne. “I spoke to a couple of North Melbourne people about this – he is as team-first as any player at that footy club. ‘Whatever is best for the team, don’t worry about me’. ‘I’ll play back pocket, I’ll play forward pocket, on the bench, whatever is the best thing for the team’. That is what I love to hear. He has got that Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis level of uncompromisingness.”
This mindset has not gone unnoticed by other football experts. Mark Stevens, who appeared on Zero Hanger’s Six Points podcast, expressed his belief that Richmond may have missed an opportunity by not selecting O’Sullivan first in the 2024 draft.
A Player with Exceptional Potential
Stevens described O’Sullivan as a “very, very good player” and noted that he was extremely close to being the number one pick. “He was obviously taken at two. I would’ve taken him ahead of Sam Lalor, as I think he’s an absolute blue-chip performer, this guy. Lalor’s good, but I think this Finn O’Sullivan is very good.”
According to Stevens, O’Sullivan is more than just a tagger. “He can mark overhead, he can go forward, he can do the lot. He’s a super player.” These comments underline the growing recognition of O’Sullivan as one of the most promising talents in the AFL.
The Future Looks Bright
Fans will get their next glimpse of O’Sullivan when the Kangaroos take on Carlton in their traditional Good Friday clash. This match is expected to be a significant test for the young midfielder and an opportunity to showcase his skills on a larger stage.
With his consistent performances and strong work ethic, O’Sullivan is quickly establishing himself as a vital player for North Melbourne. His ability to adapt to different roles on the field and his unwavering commitment to the team make him a standout talent in the league.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on O’Sullivan to see how he continues to develop and contribute to his team’s success. With the support of experienced figures like Lyon and Stevens, it seems clear that O’Sullivan is on a path to becoming one of the AFL’s top players.
