Melbourne’s Revitalised Team Sparks Excitement
Melbourne coach Steven King has called on fans to embrace the growing excitement surrounding the club’s recent transformation, following a remarkable 20-point victory over the previously unbeaten Gold Coast. The win, led by Max Gawn, marked a significant moment for the Demons as they began their season under King’s guidance.
In the match held at the MCG on Sunday, Kysaiah Pickett delivered an outstanding performance, while Jake Melksham returned with four goals. The final score was 16.13 (109) to 14.5 (89), giving the Demons a strong 3-1 start in the new season.

King expressed his optimism about the team’s progress, stating, “You’re never sure how quickly it can click and to get it to this point so far is pretty encouraging.” He praised his coaching group and the players’ growing confidence. “I’ve got an amazing coaching group that believe in their players and I think the players now are starting to believe in themselves.”
Pickett’s performance was particularly impressive, with 25 disposals, six clearances, and one goal. His efforts were complemented by Melksham, who made an immediate impact after returning from injury. The veteran forward also delivered a standout moment with a spectacular mark on Sam Collins’ shoulders before converting a long-range set shot.
Gawn, with 22 touches and one goal, and experienced recruit Jack Steele, who recorded 26 disposals and 11 clearances, played crucial roles. Latrelle Pickett added energy in attack with one goal and eight score involvements.

King emphasized the importance of fan support, saying, “I want them (supporters) to get excited about what they’re seeing.” He highlighted the blend of experienced players and young talent, aiming to create a team that can challenge in every phase of the game and be enjoyable to watch.
Gold Coast’s first loss of the season came without Christian Petracca, who missed the opportunity to face his former side due to a hamstring injury. Matt Rowell, who had overcome a finger injury, played his first game of the season, and captain Noah Anderson put in a strong performance with 22 touches and seven clearances.
Ben King, Ethan Read, Jed Walter, and Zeke Uwland each scored multiple goals, but the Suns were outplayed by a confident Melbourne team. The Demons dominated contested possession and clearances, leading to a one-sided inside-50 count.

Suns coach Damien Hardwick acknowledged the challenges faced, stating, “The middle part of the ground we got absolutely spanked.” He praised Max Gawn’s performance, noting that the Suns’ second-best ruckman was outmatched. “He’ll bounce back, there’s no question about that, but I thought our midfield had their colours lowered as well.”
