A New Chapter for a Beloved Graffiti in Derry
A beloved piece of graffiti in Derry has undergone a remarkable transformation, turning into a vibrant new mural by an internationally renowned street artist. The original graffiti, titled “Keeper Lit Sunshine,” was first spotted alongside a smiley face on a gable wall facing the busy Foyle Road about five years ago. It quickly became a symbol of community spirit and connection within the city.
The simple yet powerful message resonated with many people across Derry, becoming a cherished part of the local street art scene. However, it was recently defaced by what some described as “unsightly” graffiti, prompting a response from local artists and community leaders.
Ruairi O’Connell, project coordinator at Gasyard Wall Féile, shared his thoughts on the situation. He explained that while it was unfortunate to see the original work damaged, it also presented an opportunity to revitalize the space.
“It was just in black paint, it was kind of crudely done, but there was like a feeling that it sort of evoked within myself, for many residents in the area and for people visiting the city,” he said.
The original graffiti had become a cult favorite, rising to a level that made it a significant part of the city’s street art gallery. When it was defaced, the team at Gasyard Wall Féile saw it as a chance to bring the mural back to life.
The Transformation Project
The transformation of the mural was part of Gasyard Wall Féile’s “Graffiti on the Walls” project, which aims to breathe life into neglected spaces in the city through street art. They commissioned Dave Bonzai, an internationally recognized street artist, to reimagine the original message.

Bonzai completed the work at the end of March, much to the delight of locals and visitors alike. The new mural not only restored the original message but also added a fresh and dynamic visual element to the area.
Mr. O’Connell noted that the location is one of the busiest in the city, with many people using the road to enter Derry. He mentioned that Dave Bonzai had a unique experience while working on the mural, as he received numerous shouts of encouragement from passing cars.
“This road is very busy, there’s a lot of people coming into the city using this road,” Mr. O’Connell said. “Dave said he’s never had more people shout from cars at him while he was doing a mural. He had a really positive experience.”
Community Response
After the completion of the mural, the project was shared online, leading to thousands of interactions from people around the world. Mr. O’Connell expressed his excitement about the positive reception.
“It’s been so positive; and it’s just been such a bright spot for the city in the last couple of days – and it’s just amazing to see it,” he said.
He emphasized that the phrase “Keeper Lit Sunshine” holds a special place in the hearts of Derry’s residents. It represents a sense of unity and pride that connects the community.
This transformation not only restores a piece of public art but also highlights the importance of community involvement in preserving and enhancing urban spaces. As the new mural continues to inspire, it stands as a testament to the power of creativity and collaboration in bringing people together.
