Diaz’s Emotional Return: Filming Distress in NYC

Cameron Diaz Back in the Spotlight with New Film Projects

Hollywood favourite Cameron Diaz is making a noticeable return to the acting scene, shedding the private life she embraced for over a decade. The 53-year-old actress was recently spotted on a film set in New York City, showcasing that her acting prowess remains as sharp as ever. During the shoot, Diaz was photographed with a convincingly troubled expression, a testament to her dedication to her craft.

Her on-set style was equally striking. Diaz sported a chic, long leopard-print coat paired with classic black skinny jeans and stylish leather booties. Adding to her ensemble, she carried a generously sized black bag draped over her shoulder as she moved along the bustling New York City sidewalk. Her signature blonde hair was artfully styled into a messy bun, and she opted for minimal makeup, highlighting her enduring, fresh-faced appearance. Despite her hiatus from the silver screen since her role in the 2014 musical Annie, Diaz appeared completely at ease and in her element.

While specific details about this latest film remain somewhat under wraps, it’s confirmed that Cameron Diaz will be sharing the screen with Stephen Merchant. Merchant is not only directing the project but also co-wrote the screenplay.

The film’s plot centres around Merchant’s character, who works at an exclusive New York hotel. In a bid to maintain appearances, he finds himself in need of a wife. This leads him to strike an arrangement with a struggling stand-up comedian, portrayed by Diaz, who is in dire need of health insurance. What begins as a purely transactional agreement for their fake marriage is hinted to evolve into an unexpected romance, according to a teaser for the movie. The cast also includes notable names such as John Segarra and the comedian Joy Ride.

Cameron’s gradual re-entry into the public eye began with her starring role in the Netflix movie Back in Action, which premiered on the streaming platform in January 2025. This marked her first cinematic endeavour in ten years, following an extended break from the demanding world of Hollywood. During this hiatus, Diaz dedicated her time and energy to motherhood, raising her two children, Raddix, aged six, and Cardinal, aged two, with her husband, Benji Madden.

In a behind-the-scenes interview for Back in Action, Diaz spoke candidly about her priorities. “That was what I was putting most of my focus on. If I was doing anything other than just sort of being a mom and living my day-to-day,” she explained. “That was pretty much it. I’m just trying to stay alive just like every other mother. I’m just trying to keep it going.”

Now, it appears Diaz has a robust slate of upcoming projects. In addition to her current film, she is set to reprise her beloved role as Princess Fiona in the highly anticipated Shrek 5. Furthermore, Diaz has been cast in another Netflix action-comedy titled Bad Day. She was observed filming this project last autumn, taking on a leading role alongside a talented ensemble cast that includes Danielle Brooks, Mark Duplass, and Ed O’Neill. The premise of Bad Day, as described on IMDB, follows “A single mother struggles to fulfill a small promise to her daughter during the most devastating day she’s ever faced.”
