A Challenging Start for the Crows
Adelaide has faced a tough start to the season, leaving them in an ‘almost’ position. Their opening month has been difficult, with three losses against teams that are expected to compete for the premiership. These defeats came against Geelong, Western Bulldogs, and Fremantle, which have left the Crows’ coaches, players, and fans frustrated.
Head coach Matthew Nicks expressed his disappointment, though he tried to keep a positive outlook. “Do I look frustrated?” he asked during the post-game presser. “I think I’m just really disappointed for us. I think we know the why, as I mentioned, it is then the ability to go out and fix the why. And it’s simple; it’s hard to be in a contest from five metres away. For whatever reason, our focus isn’t where it needs to be in those key moments.”
Nicks highlighted the importance of maintaining focus during crucial moments in the game. “Great entertainment for a half of footy, but not good enough in the first half.” He emphasized that the team needs to improve their performance in these critical situations.
Struggles in Clearances
The Crows started the game slowly, falling behind in clearances against a strong Dockers midfield. They were down 0-10 in clearances, which was a significant setback. This trend continued, as Adelaide has now lost its past four home matches following their minor premiership win last season.
Despite the challenges, there were moments of hope. James Peatling, a tough on-baller, played a vital role in the second half. His performance in the third term was particularly impressive, with 11 disposals, nine kicks, four clearances, and a goal. His efforts helped lead the team’s fight back.
Improved Midfield Performance
Nicks praised the midfield’s performance in the second half, especially after Peatling’s contributions. “I really liked JP’s second half,” he said. “I’m mindful about making too many comments about individuals without going back and looking over the detail of it. But I think if you talk about the difference between the first and second half, guys like JP, our mids, (Jordan Dawson) in there.”
He noted that the team’s ability to compete in the midfield improved significantly. “Our ability in there to compete in and actually at least match it with our opponents, I think we actually went plus five or six in clearance. The main thing we adjusted was our focus and James, was a big one.”
Looking Ahead
While the Crows have faced setbacks, there is still potential for improvement. Nicks acknowledged the need for better focus and execution in key moments. The team’s ability to adjust and perform under pressure will be crucial in the coming games.
With the right adjustments and continued effort, the Crows can turn their season around. The lessons learned from these early games will be essential in building a stronger and more consistent team moving forward.
