A Disastrous Night for the Dolphins
The Dolphins faced a challenging night on Thursday, with their performance marred by a series of errors and poor decisions. One of the most notable moments came from Morgan Knowles, who was sent to the sin bin after committing a professional foul. This incident encapsulated the team’s struggles throughout the match.
The Dolphins had already suffered a setback in the Battle of Brisbane last week, and this loss only added to their woes. From the start, they were on the back foot, and the Sea Eagles took full advantage of their opportunities. The visiting team, led by Haumole Olakau’atu, displayed a fierce determination that proved too much for the Dolphins.
Olakau’atu set the tone early, breaking through weak defense and linking up with Tom Trbojevic for the first try of the game. Moments later, Trbojevic was involved again, assisting Lehi Hopoate in scoring another try. Cameron Smith, commentating on Nine, praised the quality of the pass, saying, “Beautiful hands there.”
Things quickly spiraled out of control for the Dolphins in the middle of the first half. An error from Selwyn Cobbo resulted in Knowles being sent to the sin bin. The situation worsened when Knowles ran directly into a pass from a Manly player instead of holding back, leading to his dismissal. Despite his attempts to argue with referee Grant Atkins, the decision stood.
“Even more damage is done now,” Smith remarked.
With the Dolphins down to 13 players, Manly capitalized on their numerical advantage. Kulikefu Finefeuiaki dropped the ball, allowing Hopoate to score a long-range try. “They are hurting themselves,” Smith said, highlighting the team’s self-inflicted problems.
Olakau’atu continued to dominate, delivering a short pass to Reuben Garrick, who raced through a gaping hole for Manly’s fourth try. “They are absolutely flying,” Andrew Johns commented on the commentary.
Luke Brooks extended Manly’s lead to 28-0 before halftime, with Jamal Fogarty delivering a precise grubber into the in-goal area. Johnathan Thurston, also on commentary, expressed disbelief at the first-half performance: “I can’t believe what we have just witnessed in that first half … this is diabolical for the Dolphins.”
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Manly continuing to score points. Olakau’atu, Tolu Koula, Ben Trbojevic, and Corey Waddell all crossed the line, showcasing their dominance. “It’s gonna be hard to watch these back for the Dolphins players,” Johns noted.
In a rare bright spot for the Dolphins, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow scored two late consolation tries. Herbie Farnworth added another in an exciting finish to a night that will be remembered as one of the worst in the team’s history.
