Rising Pressure on Dylan Edwards and Cameron Munster
Dylan Edwards and Cameron Munster, the current fullback and five-eighth for the New South Wales and Queensland teams respectively, are under increasing pressure to maintain their positions in the State of Origin squad. With several rivals performing at their peak, the selection process for the upcoming series has become more challenging than ever.
Edwards, who started the season strongly by helping Penrith secure their first five wins of the campaign, has seen his form dip in recent weeks. The Panthers suffered a loss to Canterbury in Round 6 and then managed a narrow victory over the Dolphins in a golden point game. In that match, Edwards had two missed tackles in just eight attempts, scoring a try and running for 190 metres. However, he only recorded one linebreak assist and was fairly contained in the loss to the Bulldogs, despite scoring a try and making seven tackle breaks.
On the other hand, James Tedesco has been performing exceptionally well in recent weeks. After a slow start to the season, the Blues’ fullback has been electric. In a recent game against Newcastle, Tedesco scored one try, set up three others, and made a staggering 16 tackle breaks while running for a game-high 271 metres. His performance was instrumental in the Roosters’ 38-24 win. Tedesco also played a key role in their previous victory over Cronulla.
Tedesco lost his Origin jersey to Edwards last year, but an injury to his rival allowed him to return for Game 1. However, Edwards replaced Tedesco in Games 2 and 3 as NSW faced back-to-back defeats. Tedesco went on to win the Dally M Medal after a standout season, proving that he is still a formidable player at the representative level. His recent performances have made a strong case for his return to the Origin team.
Challenges for Cam Munster
While Munster’s position as Queensland skipper seems secure, his recent performances for the Storm have raised concerns among Maroons coach Billy Slater. Melbourne has lost five games in a row, and Munster has yet to score a try this season. He has only four try assists in seven games, but his leadership and experience at the representative level have always been valuable.

However, there are emerging threats to Munster’s position. Sam Walker, a promising playmaker, has been putting up a strong case for Origin selection. Playing alongside Tedesco at the Roosters, Walker has delivered impressive performances. In a recent game against the Knights, he scored one try, set up two more, and had an outstanding kicking game that helped the Roosters achieve a come-from-behind win. Walker also scored a try and provided two try assists in the Round 6 victory over the Sharks.
Another player making waves is Ezra Mam, the Brisbane five-eighth. After some impressive displays for the injury-hit Broncos, Mam has entered the Origin conversation. In a tight one-point win over the Tigers, he made significant plays and contributed with a try assist and a linebreak assist. His performance in a losing effort against the Cowboys further highlighted his potential.
With these emerging talents, Slater faces a difficult decision if Munster continues to struggle in the lead-up to the Origin opener in Sydney. The pressure is mounting on both Edwards and Munster, and the upcoming games will be crucial in determining their futures in the State of Origin series.
