Viewers Fume Over “Unprofessional” Breakfast Broadcast: Popcorn, Holiday Snaps, and Empty Airwaves
A recent breakfast program on GB News has landed in hot water with viewers, who have expressed their disappointment and frustration, with many reportedly switching off the broadcast due to what they deemed an “unprofessional” segment. The incident, which involved presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ellie Costello, has sparked a strong reaction online, with viewers criticising the focus on personal holiday photos and the accompanying distractions.
A Honeymoon Interruption
The segment in question saw presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ellie Costello, joined by sports presenter Paul Coyte, pause the usual newsreel to delve into photographs from Costello’s recent honeymoon in the Maldives. Costello, 32, had recently returned from her wedding to Gerard Durkan, which took place last July.
The presenters, along with Coyte, reportedly dimmed the studio lights to create a more “cinematic” atmosphere for viewing the holiday snaps. To enhance the experience, Paul Coyte, 59, brought along a selection of snacks – three different flavours of popcorn – for the trio to enjoy as they looked through the images.
As the photos of Costello and her husband Gerard enjoying the Maldivian beaches and sunset views were displayed, Holmes and Coyte engaged in commentary, sharing their thoughts and posing questions about the couple’s experiences.
Viewer Backlash and Complaints
However, the relaxed and personal nature of the segment, coupled with the presenters’ actions, did not sit well with a significant portion of the at-home audience. Many viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their discontent, with several citing the presenters’ habit of talking with their mouths full and the audible rustling of popcorn packets as particularly irksome.
One viewer expressed their dissatisfaction, stating: “Watching Ellie’s holiday snaps while hearing Eamon talk with his mouth stuffed full is not what I switched on for. I’m off.”
Another echoed this sentiment, criticising the professionalism of the broadcast: “How unprofessional GB News! Stuffing their gobs. Just come in from work, switching straight off!”
The cost of such a lavish honeymoon also appeared to be a point of contention for some. A third viewer wrote: “Whose brilliant idea was it to have these 3 scoffing crisps whilst talking over some pictures of a honeymoon most of us could not afford. Unbearable!”
The lack of substantial news coverage was also a recurring theme in the complaints. “Come on, guys. Is there no NEWS? I’m tired and bored of this and watching them stuffing their faces. This isn’t what I pay to watch,” lamented one viewer.

Ellie Costello’s honeymoon in the Maldives took place seven months after her wedding to Gerard Durkan. The couple exchanged vows at the Chateau de Robernier, a picturesque 16th-century French castle located in Provence.
Having been together for seven years after meeting at university, the couple had previously held a civil ceremony at Chelsea’s Old Town Hall in London. Costello described the civil ceremony as feeling like their “real wedding,” highlighting the exchange of rings and the symbolic “tying of the knot,” an ancient Celtic tradition.
Among the guests celebrating their union was Costello’s GB News co-presenter, Stephen Dixon, who hosts the breakfast show with her on Thursdays and Fridays. The breakfast show itself has recently garnered recognition, winning a TRIC award for best news programme. Costello described her wedding day as “the wedding of our dreams,” with guests remarking on the film-like atmosphere.

The coverage of this personal family matter, which has seen Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz reportedly snub significant family events, led to further viewer frustration. Many expressed their disinterest in the topic, with comments such as “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn” and “I can’t stand all this Brooklyn stuff, goodbye” appearing on social media.
