Patsy Kensit’s Tumultuous Reign in the Spotlight: Finding Solace and Navigating Media Storms
Patsy Kensit, the celebrated actor who captivated audiences from a young age, has recently opened up about the intense media scrutiny she endured during her high-profile romance and marriage to Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher. The period, marked by constant press attention and public judgment, saw Kensit seeking guidance from none other than pop icon Elton John, who advised her to disengage from the relentless news cycle.
Kensit, now 58, began her relationship with Gallagher in 1995. Their whirlwind romance culminated in a wedding in April 1997, though not without significant hurdles. The couple was forced to postpone their initial nuptials due to what was described as “intrusive media attention.” Their union, which produced a son, Lennon, born in 1999, ultimately ended in divorce the following year.
Over a quarter of a century after their split, Kensit reflected on the relentless press coverage that often targeted her, including invasive commentary and criticism regarding her weight. Speaking with The Telegraph, the star, known for her roles in Absolute Beginners and Lethal Weapon 2, shared the sage advice she received: “Elton John told me I needed to stop reading the papers in the early 1990s. So I did.”
This decision to withdraw from the media’s gaze proved crucial. Kensit recalled being frequently photographed in the Nineties in states of distress or visibly frustrated, such as “looking upset” or “kicking a car door in.” These moments, she explained, often occurred during a particularly challenging phase of her marriage to Gallagher.
“I think the press had established this fragile, needy person – this image of someone who was almost everything I wasn’t,” Kensit revealed. She elaborated on the impact of the relentless “weight-shaming” and other personal attacks, stating, “All that [weight-shaming] stuff in the papers – I didn’t look at it. I didn’t read it. It’s as though they had this fictional character in their heads, and it was very difficult for them to rewrite the truth.”
Kensit’s career began remarkably early, starting as a child actor at the tender age of four. Her early work included commercials for Birds Eye, followed by significant roles in films like the 1974 adaptation of The Great Gatsby, the British thriller Hennessy, and the iconic 1986 musical Absolute Beginners. Her international breakthrough came with a role in Lethal Weapon 2 just three years later.

In more recent years, Kensit has continued to grace the small screen, taking on roles in popular British soaps such as Emmerdale and Holby City. She also joined the cast of the long-running soap opera EastEnders in 2023, further cementing her enduring presence in the television landscape.
The initial wedding plans between Kensit and Gallagher in February 1997 were a stark example of the media’s pervasive influence. The Oasis singer’s record company issued a statement confirming the cancellation, citing “obsessive and intrusive media attention” that had “removed any dignity from what was to be a private and special occasion.” The couple eventually exchanged vows in a more private ceremony at Westminster registry office the following April.
Kensit’s marital history predates her union with Gallagher. She was previously married to musician Daniel Donovan from 1988 to 1991. The year after their divorce, she married Jim Kerr, the frontman of Simple Minds. They welcomed their son, James, in 1993, and divorced three years later. Her subsequent marriage to DJ Jeremy Healy in 2007 also ended in divorce, with plans to separate announced three years after their wedding.

Last year, Kensit spoke candidly about her current relationships with the fathers of her children, describing it as “really quite sad” that she doesn’t maintain contact, while emphasizing her consistent support for a father-child connection. Her reflections underscore the personal toll that public life and tumultuous relationships can take, even as she continues to thrive in her acting career.
