Elyria’s Girls State Wrestling Comeback: Overcoming Early Hurdles

Elyria Wrestlers Rally for Podium Finishes at State Tournament

Day two of the state wrestling tournament presented an early challenge for Elyria, as Emilie Conley (120 pounds) and Jaelyn Green (145 pounds) both fell in their quarterfinal matches. Adding to the difficult start, Seraiah Jackson was eliminated in the second consolation round at 170 pounds. However, the Elyria Pioneers demonstrated remarkable resilience, with Conley and Green fighting back to secure podium spots. Both wrestlers won their second consolation matches, guaranteeing them a place among the top eight, and then advanced to the consolation quarterfinals, ensuring a top-six finish.

Elyria coach Paul Felton acknowledged the tough start to the day. “Obviously, we didn’t start off the day very well,” Felton stated. “We lost both our quarterfinals, but in both of them, we felt we had good shots to win. We felt pretty good coming into it, but it didn’t turn out the way we wanted. But these two (Conley and Green) have wrestled back really hard today.”

Emilie Conley showcased her determination. After being pinned by Lakewood’s Riley Robinson in the second consolation round, she rebounded with an impressive performance, defeating Ross’s Caroline Davis via a 15-0 technical fall in the second period.

“Honestly, that’s not what I expected to happen out there,” Conley admitted. “I kind of surprised myself, but it feels really great to know that my technique is improving, and it’s not all just strength.” Conley is set to face Miamisburg’s Lila Krull in the consolation semifinals, with a win paving the way to the third-place match. Reflecting on the tournament, Conley added, “These days have been pretty long, although the matches have been spread out. It was a super tough day, but it’s so rewarding at the end.”

Jaelyn Green also experienced a significant turnaround. Following a pin against Alder’s Reese Thomas, Green pinned her next two opponents, Marysville’s Andrea Mendez and Indian Lake’s Annalise Rapp, to secure her spot in the consolation semifinals.

“I’ve had a long journey here,” Green shared. “Last year I went 0-2, so this year I knew I had to come out and give it all I’ve got. It’s my last year, one last time, so I’ll wrestle my hardest, and whatever happens, happens.”

Green and Conley are looking to cap off an already successful season for Elyria. The team finished fifth at the state dual tournament and sent five seniors to the state tournament, highlighting the strength and experience of their graduating class.

“It’s all the hard work we put in in the room,” Green emphasized. “We do a lot of live wrestling, we scrap a lot, and we just come out on the mat and hope it shows.”

Columbia’s Hanna Advances Through Dramatic Quarterfinal

The sole area wrestler to reach the semifinals was Columbia’s Youstina Hanna. She emerged victorious from a nail-biting quarterfinal match against Salem’s Paige Menough. The contest was fraught with drama, as Hanna sustained an ankle injury, surrendered an 8-0 lead in the final period, but ultimately secured a 13-8 sudden victory in overtime with five quick points.

Hanna’s Semifinal Run and Consolation Path

Following her thrilling quarterfinal win, Hanna faced a formidable opponent in Hartley’s Nora Johnson in the 140-pound semifinals. Johnson proved to be too much, defeating Hanna 9-0. Hanna will now compete in the consolation semifinals against Seneca East’s Kiera Depinet, aiming for a strong finish to her state tournament.
