Emmett J Scanlan’s Journey Through Grief After Tragic Loss

A Journey Through Grief and Renewal

Actor Emmett J. Scanlan has opened up about his emotional struggles following the loss of a child, revealing how he spent years in what he describes as a ‘dark place’ before finding a way to move forward.

Emmett and his wife, Claire Cooper, experienced the heartbreak of a miscarriage in 2019 before eventually welcoming their son, Ocean. However, the journey was not without its challenges. Emmett spoke about the deep pain of losing a child named Phoenix, which left him feeling trapped in a state of despair for many years.

He shared how he began to change his approach to life by saying ‘yes’ to everything, almost as if it were an exercise in self-renewal. This decision led him to unexpected places, including a bungee jump from a rickety bridge in the Swiss Alps.

“I was in a very dark place personally a few years ago,” he explained. “Then I started saying yes to everything, almost like an exercise. A few weeks later I found myself standing on a rickety bridge in the Swiss Alps about to do a bungee jump. A series of ‘yeses’ brought me to that place.”

Standing on the bridge, despite his fear of heights, Emmett recounted the moment he took the leap. “Someone was doing a countdown – 5,4,3,2,1 – and I just said to myself, ‘Fear makes prisoners of us all,’ and I jumped.”

This experience marked a turning point for Emmett, helping him confront his fears and take risks. He credits fatherhood with transforming his perspective on life.

“Fatherhood changed me,” he said. “I owe my kids everything. I had some difficult years, wondering who I was and what I was doing in life. Then you become a father. Twenty-three years ago, my daughter, Kayla, was born (with a previous partner), and I realized that I never truly understood what joy was.”

He described how becoming a parent taught him about unconditional love and the importance of relearning life rather than trying to impose his own ways on his children.

“When a child comes into your life, it’s time to relearn life and not teach them your ways,” he said. “That’s what my kids have done for me. I didn’t understand unconditional love until I became a father.”

Emmett admitted that talking about these experiences still brings tears to his eyes, but they are not tears of sadness. “I’m crying now, not because I’m sad, but because I’m so grateful for all that they have given me and all that they continue to give me.”

The Power of Saying Yes

Emmett’s story highlights the importance of embracing new experiences and taking chances, even when they seem daunting. His journey from grief to hope serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges.

  • By saying ‘yes’ to opportunities, he discovered new parts of himself.
