Europe’s Top 2026 Beaches: Traveller Picks for Crete, Algarve & Sardinia

Dreaming of Summer? Tripadvisor Unveils the World’s Top Beaches for 2026

As the grey skies of February linger, many Australians find themselves yearning for the sun-drenched shores and the soothing rhythm of the ocean. If your mind is already on summer holidays and sandy toes, a recent ranking from Tripadvisor, the globe’s leading travel guidance platform, might just be the perfect inspiration to start planning your next coastal escape.

Each year, Tripadvisor meticulously compiles a list of the world’s most exceptional beaches, drawing on millions of reviews and opinions shared by travellers worldwide. “For many travellers, the beach is the main event,” explains Laurel Greatrix, chief communications officer at Tripadvisor. “Based on millions of trips, reviews, and opinions, these awards highlight the very best beaches in the world – making it easier to decide where to go and how to spend your time once you’re there.”

This year, the accolades extend beyond simply the most beautiful stretches of sand, with a new ‘one of a kind’ category introduced to celebrate beaches boasting truly unique features. From the charming sight of penguins waddling along the shore in South Africa to the dramatic backdrop of ancient ruins in Sicily, this year’s selections showcase the incredible diversity of coastlines our planet has to offer.

The World’s Premier Beach Destinations Revealed

Claiming the coveted title of the world’s best beach for 2026 is Isla Pasion in Mexico. This secluded island paradise makes a triumphant return to the top spot after a three-year absence. Accessible via a scenic 10-minute boat ride from Cozumel, Isla Pasion is a haven for snorkellers. Visitors can glide over protected coral reefs, swim alongside graceful stingrays, and witness the vital nesting sites of sea turtles.

Securing the second position globally, and earning the title of Europe’s best beach, is Elafonissi Beach in Crete, Greece. This iconic coastal gem consistently features in top rankings, largely due to its distinctive pink-hued sand, a mesmerising result of crushed seashells. The beach offers shallow, warm lagoons that are ideal for families with young children, as well as deeper waters perfect for swimming and snorkelling enthusiasts. For the more adventurous, the surrounding cedar forests provide opportunities for refreshing hikes, while the sandbanks are a delight for birdwatchers.

Following closely in third place is Balos Lagoon, another breathtaking Cretan destination. Once a hideout for pirates, Balos is now a protected conservation area renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and striking rocky landscape. While sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent and snacks can be purchased, visitors planning to drive should be prepared for a steep trek down to the beach from the car park, making suitable footwear a wise choice. Tripadvisor advises checking the weather forecast beforehand, as the beach can experience windy conditions. To ensure the most tranquil experience, visiting early in the morning is recommended, and a ferry trip from Kissamos Port offers a relaxed and convenient way to reach Balos.

The top 10 also features two other remarkable European beaches. Praia da Falésia in Portugal’s Algarve region was awarded fifth place, celebrated for its dramatic ochre cliffs that provide spectacular panoramic views. Meanwhile, La Pelosa Beach on the Italian island of Sardinia claimed eighth spot, captivating visitors with its Caribbean-like waters and the historic 16th-century watchtower, Torre della Pelosa.

Discovering the World’s Most Unique Coastal Wonders

The inaugural ‘one of a kind’ list shines a spotlight on the planet’s most extraordinary coastal experiences. Leading this unique category is Boulders Beach Penguin Colony in South Africa. This incredible destination offers the unparalleled joy of observing and photographing the charming, endangered African penguins in their natural habitat.

Taking the second spot in this special category is the European gem, Isola Bella, located just off the coast of Sicily, Italy. This small, rocky nature reserve is connected to the mainland pebble beach by a narrow sandbar that emerges at low tide. Isola Bella is particularly famous for the stunning vista it offers of Taormina’s ancient Greek theatre, perched dramatically high on the cliffside.

For the United Kingdom, Bamburgh Beach in Northumberland secured the third position on the ‘one of a kind’ list. This magnificent beach is instantly recognisable by the iconic silhouette of Bamburgh Castle overlooking its miles of soft, white sand. It’s an ideal location for leisurely coastal walks, with a dedicated dog-friendly section near the picturesque village of Bamburgh.
