In unrelated but intriguing news, a former co-star from Desperate Housewives recently shed light on his relatively short tenure on the beloved primetime series. Jesse Metcalfe, who played John Rowland, the gardener entangled in an affair with Eva Longoria’s character, Gabrielle Solis, revealed the reasons behind his character’s limited role.
Metcalfe, now 47, appeared on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, where he candidly discussed the early days of his career. “I was fired from Desperate Housewives,” he told host Amanda Hirsch. He explained that after the show’s inaugural season, the creative team struggled to find further narrative direction for his storyline.
The show’s creator, Marc Cherry, reportedly conveyed that the series was firmly focused on the housewives themselves, not their romantic entanglements with the gardening staff. Metcalfe recalled being told, “This isn’t Desperate Gardeners, this is Desperate Housewives, so unfortunately you’re not going to be a series regular moving forward on the show.”
While his role was reduced to intermittent appearances, Metcalfe saw it as an opportunity. “At that time I had been offered [the lead role in] John Tucker Must Die from 20th Century Fox, so I was like, hey, cool, no big deal. I’m going to be a movie star,” he reminisced.
This revelation follows Metcalfe’s earlier reflections with People magazine last August, where he spoke about Desperate Housewives being his “big break.” He described the experience as “just kind of riding the wave,” acknowledging how the show propelled his career. “That show really broke me and I had everything coming at me and I was just enjoying it,” he said.
The ensemble cast of Desperate Housewives, which also featured Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, and Nicollette Sheridan, was famously rumoured to have experienced behind-the-scenes drama throughout its eight-season run. However, Metcalfe maintained that he was largely unaware of any significant contention during his time on set.
“I was oblivious to it, basically, you know, because I was just so thrilled to be on a show and just so in the moment,” he explained. He added that he was simply grateful for the opportunity, having previously navigated a challenging pilot season without booking any roles. His casting in Desperate Housewives, which was a recast role, came at the very end of that pilot season, a fortunate turn of events that launched his career.
