Ex- Arsenal keeper dies in train accident

Tragedy Strikes as Former Footballer Alexander Manninger Dies in Collision

The football community has been left in shock following the tragic death of former Arsenal and Austrian national team goalkeeper, Alexander Manninger. The 48-year-old passed away after a collision between a car and a train at a level crossing in Nußdorf am Haunsberg, approximately 15 kilometers north of Salzburg, on Wednesday morning.

Local media reported that the incident occurred around 8:30 am, with a local train colliding with a car. First responders were able to free the 48-year-old from his vehicle before emergency services arrived. Despite the efforts of paramedics and an emergency physician, Manninger succumbed to his injuries at the scene. No other individuals were in the car, and the train driver remained unharmed. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, with police believing that the car was hit and dragged by the train as it crossed the tracks.

A Legacy of Excellence

Manninger’s career spanned several decades and saw him become one of Austria’s most respected footballers. As the first Austrian to play for Arsenal in the Premier League, he made his mark during the 1997/98 season, which saw the Gunners secure their first league title in over two decades. Although he often played second fiddle to David Seaman, Manninger contributed significantly to the team’s success, making 37 Premier League appearances and playing a key role in their league, FA Cup, and two English Super Cup victories.

After leaving Arsenal, Manninger continued his career in Serie A, where he eventually won the league with Juventus in the 2011/12 season. His career came to an end in 2017 when he joined Liverpool but did not make a single appearance for the club.

Recognition and Tribute

The Austrian Football Association (AFA) paid tribute to Manninger, describing him as an outstanding ambassador for the game both on and off the pitch. Peter Schöttel, the AFA’s sporting director, highlighted the impact Manninger had on young goalkeepers, praising his professionalism, composure, and reliability. He added that his achievements would be remembered with the utmost respect.

“His international career set standards and inspired and influenced many young goalkeepers. His professionalism, composure, and reliability made him an integral part of his teams and the national team,” Schöttel said. “Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

A Career Rooted in Passion

Manninger began his professional journey with Austria Salzburg before making the move to Arsenal in 1997. He earned 33 caps for the Austrian national team and was part of the squad that participated in the 2008 European Championships, which were hosted in his home country. His contributions to domestic and international football were widely recognized, and he became a symbol of dedication and excellence.

Arsenal also released a statement expressing their deep sorrow over his passing. The club shared a message on social media, saying, “All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this incredibly sad time.” They added, “Rest in peace, Alex.”

A Life Remembered

As the investigation into the accident continues, the football world mourns the loss of a true legend. Manninger’s legacy will live on through the countless players he inspired and the memories he created on the pitch. His passing is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment.
