Ex-Chelsea Star Probed in Belgium Over Gambling Deal

Eden Hazard Faces Scrutiny Over Gambling Ambassador Role in Belgium

Former Chelsea and Real Madrid star Eden Hazard is reportedly facing an investigation by Belgian authorities following his appointment as a global ambassador for Stake, a gambling company that is blacklisted in his homeland. The Belgian Gaming Commission is set to examine whether Hazard’s promotional activities are targeting the Belgian market, where advertising for gambling is strictly prohibited.

Hazard, who boasts a massive following of 27 million on Instagram, recently shared a video announcing his partnership with Stake. However, this move has put him in a precarious position with the Belgian regulator. Stefaan Savenberg, a spokesperson for the Belgian Gaming Commission, stated that the commission will “examine whether the advertising by Eden Hazard is targeting the Belgian market.” He reiterated that “advertising for gambling is prohibited in Belgium.”

Should the commission determine that Hazard’s activities are indeed aimed at Belgian consumers, he will be issued a formal notice to sever ties with Stake. Savenberg cautioned that “If this does not happen, a sanction could be considered.”

Stake is among a list of companies that do not possess a licence to operate in Belgium, placing them on the Belgian Gaming Commission’s blacklist. This blacklist is compiled based on the absence of required licensing, which renders their operation illegal within Belgium’s jurisdiction. In 2021, the commission added approximately 20 more operators, including Stake, to this prohibited list.

Hazard is not the only prominent former footballer to align himself with Stake in an ambassadorial capacity. He joins a roster of well-known names such as Iker Casillas, Sergio Aguero, and Patrice Evra. Upon his appointment, Hazard expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, “I am looking forward to connecting with fans in meaningful new ways and sharing, with Stake, moments of adrenaline and the pure joy of football.”

Hazard’s illustrious career saw him become a beloved figure in the Premier League, earning a place in the Premier League Hall of Fame. During his seven-year tenure at Chelsea, he scored 85 goals and was instrumental in the club securing six major trophies. His subsequent move to Real Madrid, however, was marred by injuries and a dip in form, leading to a less successful period before his retirement from professional football in 2023.

Since hanging up his boots, Hazard has been seen back on the pitch primarily for charity matches. He recently participated in the “Match for Hope” event in January, the third iteration of this charity initiative. These events are understood to have collectively raised over £15 million, with proceeds directed towards supporting disadvantaged children across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The focus on charitable endeavours highlights a contrast with his current situation involving a blacklisted gambling company. The Belgian Gaming Commission’s investigation will be crucial in determining the next steps for the former football icon.
