Ayalah Deborah Bentovim, known to many as Sister Bliss, is a 55-year-old English musician, producer, DJ, and the co-founder and keyboardist of the dance band Faithless. Her journey in the music industry has been marked by creativity, resilience, and an unwavering passion for her craft. From her early days as a young artist to becoming a key figure in the global dance scene, Sister Bliss has left an indelible mark on the world of music.
Early Influences and Musical Beginnings
Growing up in a family that valued the arts, Sister Bliss was surrounded by music from an early age. Her father was a jazz musician, and she would often play her toy saxophone along with his tunes. This early exposure to music led her to perform in a school production of West Side Story, where she first discovered her love for playing the saxophone. By the age of 13, she was already creating her own “mad little tunes,” experimenting with the synthesizers her father had left behind after his divorce.
At 15 or 16, a wild house party at her mother’s home became the catalyst for her DJ career. During this event, her father’s Yamaha DX7 was stolen, and she ended up having to admit to the chaos. However, this experience taught her the value of perseverance. Stuck in the house with tonsillitis, she spent the week practicing DJing, mastering the art of spinning vinyl and creating wild rave tunes.
The Formation of Faithless and Their Rise to Fame
Faithless was formed in 1995 by Rollo Armstrong, Jamie Catto, and Maxi Jazz. Their breakthrough came with the 1995 single “Insomnia,” which became a worldwide hit and remains a dance classic. The band released eight studio albums over the years, with their latest, Champion Sound, released in September 2025. This album marks the second without Maxi Jazz, who passed away in 2022. The song “Nate’s Tune” from 2006 was dedicated to her son, Nate, who is now 19 years old.
Sister Bliss recalls how Maxi Jazz’s unique presence in the band brought a new dimension to their sound. He was a Buddhist rapper from Brixton, and his philosophies inspired the band to create meaningful lyrics. The title of “Insomnia” came from her own experiences of working long hours in the studio and DJing late into the night. Maxi had never experienced insomnia, so he drew from personal struggles, like a tooth abscess, to write the lyrics.
Navigating Success and Challenges
The sudden success of Faithless brought both excitement and challenges. Sister Bliss admits that it was disorienting and stressful, especially when relationships within the band began to break down. Touring, while exhilarating, was also lonely. She describes the demanding nature of the industry, where long hours, jet lag, and constant travel took a toll on her well-being.
She also reflects on the challenges faced by women in the music industry. Sister Bliss speaks candidly about the sexism and ageism she has encountered throughout her career. Despite these obstacles, she has remained resilient, using her platform to support other women in the industry. She emphasizes the importance of mental health and the lack of security in a career that offers no paid certainty, sick pay, or maternity leave.
Embracing Age and Identity
As a woman in the industry, Sister Bliss has always felt the pressure to look a certain way. She uses flamboyant fashion to bring energy to the dance floor, but she also rejects the idea of aging gracefully. Instead, she embraces her age and refuses to let it define her. She believes that age should not make one invisible and continues to push boundaries in her music and performances.
Her approach to fitness has evolved over the years. While she used to be able to dance all night, she now focuses more on maintaining her health. She finds strength in being physically fit and feels empowered on stage. Health, she says, is wealth.
Honoring Maxi Jazz and Looking Ahead
Sister Bliss misses Maxi Jazz deeply, often dreaming about him. After his passing, the band faced a difficult decision about whether to continue. However, the overwhelming support from fans encouraged them to carry on. Performing live again, especially in tribute to Maxi, has been a source of comfort and connection.
She feels that musically, she still has much to say. Faithless has soundtracked the lives of many people, and that legacy is something she takes pride in. While she worries about the future, she remains optimistic, especially about the upcoming summer festivals.

She jokes about her son’s friends begging for concert tickets, but she knows that her music continues to resonate with new generations.
