Final arrangements revealed for Sunderland icon who united music stars on Wearside

A Celebration of a Music Legend’s Life

The funeral of a Sunderland music legend will be held later this month, marking the end of an era for many who remember his contributions to the local music scene. Final respects will be paid to Geoff Docherty when his funeral service takes place at Sunderland Crematorium on April 17. Following the service, people can gather to remember Geoff with informal drinks at The Peacock pub in Sunderland.

Geoff was more than just a name in the history of Sunderland’s music scene. He packed out venues such as the Bay Hotel and the Locarno, and is forever remembered as the man who brought iconic bands like Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin, and Tyrannosaurus Rex to the city during the ’60s and ’70s.

A Journey of Success and Passion

Geoff’s story is one of remarkable success. He carved a niche for himself as a music promoter in the 1960s after serving six years in the Fleet Air Arm. His journey began as a club doorman before he transitioned into music promotion. His first venture was at the Bay Hotel in South Bents.

Family were the first band Geoff booked to play at the Bay, on January 6, 1969, with tickets costing six shillings each. Then came Free a week later. Tyrannosaurus Rex played at the Bay Hotel in June 1969 and at Sunderland’s Locarno ballroom in November of the same year.

Iconic Performances and Lasting Impact

One of the most memorable performances Geoff arranged was the Rod Stewart and the Faces gig at the Locarno in 1973. Radio One DJ John Peel, another great friend of Geoff’s, once declared this event as his all-time favourite.

Geoff, who died last month, also booked names such as David Bowie and Mott the Hoople. He was also the manager of a band from South Shields called Beckett, whom he first heard playing at Annabel’s in Sunderland.

A Legacy That Lives On

Friends have remembered him as “the catalyst for a life-long love of music for thousands of people.” His influence extended beyond the stage, inspiring generations of music lovers in Sunderland and beyond.

The funeral will be held at Sunderland Crematorium, starting at 2.30pm on April 17. It is a time to celebrate the life of a man who helped shape the cultural landscape of the city and left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
