First In-Laws Make BBC Show History in Race Across the World

In-Laws Forge Unlikely Bond on Gruelling Race Across the World

In a television first, a pair of in-laws, described as “effectively strangers,” are set to embark on a monumental journey for the upcoming sixth series of the popular BBC show, Race Across the World. Mark and Margo, united by a poignant family tragedy and a poignant dying wish, will be among the five teams navigating a staggering 12,000-kilometre (7,450-mile) odyssey across Europe and Asia.

Their decision to participate in the high-stakes competition stems from a deeply personal request from Mark’s late wife and Margo’s sister, Julia. Julia’s final wish was for the two to forge a genuine friendship after her passing. “It’s the maddest thing because we’re just not someone you choose to go on a holiday with, let alone this kind of thing,” Margo confessed, “but I just had this feeling it was the right thing to do. I asked him, and he said yes because Julia wanted us to be friends.”

Mark echoed this sentiment, adding, “It was her last dying wish… but also I wanted to experience the excitement of Race Across the World.” This unique pairing highlights the profound impact of family bonds and the unexpected paths life can take.

The Ultimate Test of Endurance and Ingenuity

The BBC has billed this sixth series as its most challenging to date. The teams will traverse a complex route, commencing in Italy and winding through Greece, Türkiye, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, with the ultimate destination being northern Mongolia. This gruff and demanding itinerary will undoubtedly push the contestants to their absolute limits.

The diverse range of competing duos in this season includes:

  • Best Friends: Jo and Kush
  • Siblings: Katie and Harrison
  • Father and Daughter: Andrew and Molly
  • Cousins: Puja and Roshni
  • In-Laws: Mark and Margo

In true Race Across the World fashion, participants will be stripped of modern conveniences. They will be forbidden from using smartphones or bank cards, relying solely on a strict cash budget equivalent to the cost of flying the same route. This limitation forces a reliance on resourcefulness, navigation skills, and human interaction to overcome obstacles. The team that successfully reaches the final destination first will be crowned the winner and awarded a £20,000 prize. The gripping drama and breathtaking scenery will unfold across nine episodes on BBC One.

Beyond the Race: BBC’s Podcast Expansion

The launch of this new series coincides with a significant expansion of Race Across the World‘s digital footprint. The BBC has introduced a series of spin-off video podcasts, signalling a new era for content delivery on platforms like iPlayer, BBC Sounds, and YouTube. This strategic move is informed by recent survey data revealing that a substantial three in five podcast listeners have engaged with one in the past week.

The success of existing video podcasts, such as The Traitors: Uncloacked and The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloacked, which garnered a combined 11.8 million plays between early October and early November, further cemented the BBC’s commitment to this format.

This expansion includes five new shows:

  • Sort Your Life Out Unpacked
  • Race Across the World: The Detour
  • Pop Top Ten
  • Uncanny Cold Cases
  • Fame Under Fire with Anoushka Mutanda-Dougherty

Scott Mills, a familiar face and winner of the celebrity version of Race Across the World, will lend his voice and presence to Race Across the World: The Detour. This podcast is described by the BBC as the programme’s “younger, wilder sibling,” promising an unfiltered look at the highs and lows of the upcoming series. He will be joined by Alfie Watts, the winner of the fourth series. Fans can tune in and listen to these weekly podcasts on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds, immediately after each new episode of the main series airs next month.

Since its debut in 2019, Race Across the World has captivated audiences with its unique blend of adventure and human connection. Across five series, a total of 42 episodes have been broadcast, showcasing the extraordinary journeys of ordinary people. The BBC iPlayer synopsis perfectly encapsulates the show’s essence: “No flights, no phones – and one high-stakes, low-budget race to the finish. On a globe-spanning adventure of a lifetime, which pair will cross the line first?”
