Fitzgibbon Slams “Flat Track Bullies” Jab

Cronulla Sharks head coach Craig Fitzgibbon has firmly rejected the “flat track bullies” label levelled at his team, even as he commits his future to the club until the end of the 2029 season. The extension, which sees him remain at the helm for at least another six years, comes after two consecutive preliminary final appearances. However, it also arrives at a pivotal moment for the Sharks, who are facing the potential end of their premiership window without a grand final victory and in the wake of a disappointing loss to the Dolphins.

Fitzgibbon, speaking on SEN Radio, questioned the basis of the “flat track bullies” tag, particularly in relation to his playing group’s ability to reach the business end of the season.

Challenging the “Flat Track Bullies” Narrative

“I don’t understand what data there is around that,” Fitzgibbon stated, addressing the criticism. “We have to be beating someone if we get to the prelims.” He acknowledged the team’s struggles against the Penrith Panthers, a team they have consistently failed to overcome, and the fact they haven’t progressed beyond the preliminary final stage. “The team we haven’t beat which is Penrith, that’s a fair criticism, and we haven’t got past the prelim, that’s absolutely fair (criticism),” he admitted.

However, Fitzgibbon argued that reaching the preliminary finals necessitates beating other strong teams. “We’re all in the business of winning premierships and the business of getting the big one, and we haven’t been able to do that,” he conceded. “But to say we haven’t beaten top teams…well, we have to get there (to the preliminary finals). So, it’s actually not fact.”

Strategic Extension Amidst Player Uncertainty

The decision to secure Fitzgibbon’s services until 2029 comes at a time when a significant number of Sharks players are also off-contract at the end of the current season. This includes prominent names such as:

  • Jayden Berrell
  • Tuku Hau Tapuha
  • Blake Hosking
  • Sione Katoa
  • William Kennedy
  • Cameron McInnes
  • Hohepa Puru
  • Niwhai Puru
  • Jesse Ramien
  • Toby Rudolf
  • Sam Stonestreet
  • Braden Uele

Fitzgibbon suggested that the club’s powerbrokers saw the extension as a crucial move to provide stability for the playing group and the club’s long-term strategic planning. “Well, we’ve been sort of in discussions for some time now,” he explained. “They felt like it was important to get something down. Obviously…with a number of players off contract, it makes sense to have some stability there and make decisions in a bit more of a strategic sense.”

He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “So, I was grateful for the opportunity from the club and the board to extend, and yeah, it just felt right.”

The Sharks have also recently made their first significant signing in over 12 months, securing the services of English Super League player Owen Trout. Trout is set to join the club for the 2027 and 2028 seasons from the Leigh Leopards, signalling a forward-thinking approach to squad development.

The extension for Fitzgibbon, despite his contract not expiring until the end of 2027, highlights the club’s confidence in his leadership and vision. It also comes at a time when the coaching market is relatively tight, making it prudent for the Sharks to lock in their preferred candidate. The dual pressures of player retention and the desire for coaching continuity appear to have driven this early agreement.

Fitzgibbon’s comments suggest a desire to move past the perception of being a team that performs well against lesser opposition but falters against the elite. The Sharks’ recent performances, particularly their inability to break through against teams like the Panthers and their consistent exit at the preliminary final stage, have fuelled this narrative. By extending Fitzgibbon’s tenure, the Sharks are signalling a long-term commitment to his coaching philosophy and a belief that he is the man to finally deliver a premiership to the club. The upcoming seasons will be crucial in determining whether this faith is well-placed and if Fitzgibbon can indeed guide the Sharks past their perceived limitations and into grand final glory. The upcoming player re-signings will also be a key indicator of the club’s future direction and the players’ belief in Fitzgibbon’s leadership.
