Flanagan admits pressure after Dragons’ struggles with 30 players unable to be sacked

St George Illawarra Dragons Head Coach Faces Crucial Test

St George Illawarra Dragons head coach Shane Flanagan has acknowledged the immense pressure he is under as the team prepares for a pivotal period in their 2026 season. The Dragons have endured a challenging start, losing four consecutive games, which has placed significant scrutiny on Flanagan’s leadership and decision-making.

Despite showing moments of promise, such as a strong performance against the Canterbury Bulldogs and a commendable first half against the Melbourne Storm, the team has struggled in recent weeks. Their defensive lapses and poor ball handling have been particularly concerning, especially during their match against the Gold Coast Titans, where they allowed the opposition to gain momentum.

In between these games, the Dragons suffered another heavy defeat against the Parramatta Eels, compounding the pressure on Flanagan. Speaking with AAP ahead of the Round 5 clash with the North Queensland Cowboys, Flanagan admitted that his position is at risk if the team fails to secure wins.

“I fully understand it. If you’re going to coach at a big club we expect to win,” Flanagan told AAP. “That’s the cut-throat nature we’re in in sport. You see it all over the world if you don’t win.”

Flanagan emphasized that while the club’s management has been supportive, the reality is that results will determine his future. He highlighted that changing the entire squad is not an option, stating, “We can’t change our 30-man roster, I can’t sack 30 players. So guess what, it’s [on me].”

The upcoming fixtures are critical for the Dragons. They will face the Manly Sea Eagles in Wollongong next weekend, followed by home games against the South Sydney Rabbitohs on April 18 and the Sydney Roosters on Anzac Day. A series of losses could jeopardize Flanagan’s contract.

Flanagan, who led Cronulla to a premiership in 2016, is now considered one of the most pressured coaches in the game. This comes after Manly’s decision to part ways with Kieran Foran and Todd Payten’s Cowboys securing two consecutive wins.

Key Challenges Facing the Dragons

One of the primary issues for the Dragons is team selection. Flanagan has been reluctant to make changes, particularly in the halves, despite ongoing struggles in attack. This lack of adaptability has raised concerns among fans and analysts alike.

Clint Gutherson, the fullback, is also under pressure, while Shane Flanagan’s son and five-eighth, Kyle Flanagan, will miss this week’s game due to a concussion. Instead of rushing in young talent Kade Reed, Flanagan has opted to field Lyhkan King-Togia, with Daniel Atkinson remaining at halfback.

Looking Ahead

As the Dragons prepare for their next matches, the focus will be on whether Flanagan can implement changes that lead to improved performances. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the future of the coaching staff and the direction of the team.

With high expectations and mounting pressure, Flanagan must find a way to turn the tide for the Dragons. The success or failure of the next few games could define his tenure and the team’s prospects for the remainder of the season.
