The Philadelphia Flyers are on the cusp of a playoff berth, but a recent overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets served as a stark reminder of the challenges that lie ahead. In a hard-fought contest that carried the intensity of a postseason matchup, the Flyers ultimately fell short, securing only a single point in a 2-1 shootout defeat. This result snapped their two-game winning streak, though their point streak now extends to three games. The decisive goal in the shootout came from Kirill Marchenko, who beat Flyers goaltender Dan Vladař with a skillful backhand.
The game began with the Flyers appearing to be in control, but it was the Blue Jackets who struck first. Just over four minutes into the first period, a pass intended for Alex Bump in the offensive zone was intercepted by Marchenko. This turnover led to a quick transition for Columbus, with Mason Marchment ultimately taking a shot from the left circle. Adam Fantilli then had two opportunities to put the puck in before Flyers defenseman Damon Severson gained possession. Severson’s shot, however, deflected off Travis Konecny, who was engaged with Fantilli in front of the net. Konecny went down and remained on the ice in apparent pain, while Fantilli continued his play, finding Marchenko for the opening goal as Vladař was caught out of position.
Konecny’s status was a concern, as he remained down for a significant period. After skating to the bench, he was seen speaking with assistant athletic trainer Alex Ambrose but did not immediately head down the tunnel, offering a glimmer of hope.
Fortunately for the Flyers, Konecny and his linemates were able to answer back. Alex Bump made a strong play to maintain possession during a zone entry, allowing the Flyers to set up their offense. While they initially worked the puck around the perimeter, possession led to Nick Seeler finding Christian Dvorak at the top of the zone. Dvorak then executed a drop pass back to Emil Andrae, who had just entered the play. Andrae, with time and space, moved in and fired a wrist shot toward the net, with Bump positioned in front. Bump, in his fifth NHL game, managed to tip the puck in for his second career goal. However, the celebration was delayed as the referees initially missed the puck entering the net. It struck the post and deflected back out, with play continuing for another 14 seconds. The Flyers’ bench vocally pointed out the goal, and the play was eventually reviewed and confirmed.
This goal marked a significant milestone for Bump, who now boasts three points in five NHL games. Andrae has also found his scoring touch, registering points in consecutive games since being reinserted into the lineup. Dvorak’s assist on the goal set a new career high for him in points with 39, surpassing his previous best from the 2019-20 season.
The second period proved to be a less eventful, though more physical, affair. While scoring chances were scarce, Owen Tippett had a prime opportunity on a pass from Nikita Grebenkin, who also set up Luke Glendening for a partial breakaway. The period was characterized by a significant increase in physicality, with the two teams combining for 18 hits.
A notable incident occurred when Carl Grundström delivered a check to Damon Severson behind the Blue Jackets’ net, prompting Adam Fantilli to engage Grundström in a fight. Both players received minors for boarding and roughing, respectively, along with five-minute majors for fighting. Later, Christian Dvorak absorbed a hard hit from Kent Johnson as he attempted to turn up ice, which created a scoring chance for Boone Jenner that Vladař managed to stop.
The Flyers’ power play, however, continued to be a point of frustration. Despite having four opportunities with the man advantage, including a lengthy 3:35 stretch at the start of the third period, they were unable to convert. Statistics indicated that they registered 13 shot attempts and five shots on goal during nearly eight minutes of five-on-four power-play time, highlighting their struggles to capitalize on these crucial situations.
Breakaway Concerns and Injury Updates
A concerning moment for the Flyers occurred late in the first period when forward Bobby Barkey took a hard, high hit from Kirill Marchenko in the offensive zone corner. The impact, from behind and high on the 5-foot-10 Barkey by the 6-3 Marchenko, knocked off Barkey’s helmet. He remained down for an extended period before skating off under his own power, but he did head down the tunnel. What was initially assessed as a major penalty for boarding was later downgraded to a minor after review. Barkey did not start the second period on the bench but returned to the ice less than two minutes into the frame.
In other roster news, forward Garnet Hathaway and defenseman Noah Juulsen were healthy scratches for the game. The Flyers’ tendency to trail early in games was again evident, as they found themselves down 1-0 for the 45th time in 66 games this season.
Looking Ahead
The Flyers are set to embark on a three-game road trip out west, beginning Wednesday against the Anaheim Ducks. This matchup will feature a reunion with Cutter Gauthier, who was a notable draft selection for the Flyers before opting to sign with Anaheim. The game also marks the return of Trevor Zegras to Anaheim, his former team.
