A Journey of Resilience: Angus Crichton’s Path to 200 Games, Fueled by Unwavering Support
Sydney Roosters forward Angus Crichton is on the cusp of a significant milestone, preparing to play his 200th National Rugby League (NRL) match. This achievement, however, is more than just a tally of games; it represents a profound journey of personal resilience, marked by significant mental health challenges and the steadfast support of his wife, Chloe.
Crichton, now 30, has established an impressive NRL career since his first-grade debut with the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2016. His path has been anything but smooth, however, as he has openly navigated well-publicised struggles with his mental health. It is his wife, Chloe, whom he met during one of the most turbulent periods of his life, that he credits with helping him emerge stronger on the other side.
The couple’s story began in England in late 2022, a time when Crichton was part of the triumphant Australian Rugby League World Cup squad. Tragically, just weeks after they met, Crichton experienced a severe medical episode in the south of France. This episode was linked to undiagnosed bipolar disorder, a condition that profoundly impacted his life.

“The easiest option for her was to ditch this bloke she had met a month or so earlier, when I was locked in a psychiatric ward,” Crichton recounted to the Sydney Morning Herald. Despite the immense difficulties and the uncertainty of his situation, Chloe chose to remain by his side. “But she somehow saw the good in me and chose to stay in contact,” he added, his voice filled with gratitude.
Their connection deepened rapidly, and the couple has been inseparable ever since. Their bond is now set to be celebrated with the imminent arrival of their first child, with Chloe being 37 weeks pregnant. “She (Chloe) eventually ended up my girlfriend, then wife, now the [soon-to-be] mother of our child,” Crichton shared, a clear sense of joy and contentment in his words.
Even when Crichton’s future in rugby league appeared uncertain, Chloe never wavered in her commitment. Her own father, Clem, had experienced the devastating impact of mental health loss, having lost his brother. This personal history deeply influenced Chloe’s perspective. “My Dad, Clem, lost his brother to mental health, and he told me how if he [his brother] had someone to talk to, it might have been different,” Chloe explained. “So, ‘Whatever is going on with this guy, just keep talking to him,’ Dad told me.” This advice became a guiding principle for Chloe, reinforcing her resolve to support Angus through his struggles.
A Legacy of Hope and Gratitude
Looking back on his nearly decade-long career, Crichton acknowledges the immense challenges he has faced. Yet, he expresses profound gratitude for his current position and the life he leads. He harbours a strong hope that his personal story can serve as an inspiration to others who are grappling with their own mental health battles.

“If I can help someone feel more comfortable, or feel more normal or seen, that’s a positive for me,” Crichton stated, highlighting his desire to destigmatise mental health conversations. “I’m super blessed to live the life I live. Rugby league has given me everything.”
The milestone of 200 NRL games carries significant weight for Crichton, prompting deep reflection. He is quick to acknowledge the many individuals who have contributed to his journey. Beyond his club commitments, Crichton has also represented New South Wales in 17 State of Origin games and Australia in 11 Test matches. He was also a key member of the Sydney Roosters team that clinched the premiership in 2019, a testament to his skill and dedication on the field.
Crichton’s journey is a powerful reminder that success in professional sport is often forged not just through physical prowess, but also through mental fortitude and the unwavering support of loved ones. His willingness to share his experiences openly is a significant step towards fostering a more understanding and supportive environment for mental health within the sporting community and beyond.
