The passing of former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper Alex Manninger has sent shockwaves through the football community. The 48-year-old, who also represented Austria on the international stage, died after the car he was driving was struck by a train at a crossing near Salzburg. His untimely death has led to an outpouring of grief from fans, clubs, and fellow players alike.
Manninger’s career spanned several top-tier clubs across Europe. He made 33 appearances for the Austrian national team and spent time at Arsenal between 1997 and 2001, where he was part of the squad that won the league title and FA Cup in the 1997-98 season. Though primarily a reserve, his contributions were invaluable. He later played for Liverpool during the 2016-17 season, marking the end of his professional playing career.
In Italy, Manninger had stints with Fiorentina, Torino, Bologna, Siena, Udinese, and Juventus. His journey through European football showcased his versatility and dedication to the sport.
The Austrian Football Association (OEFB) expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Manninger’s role as an ambassador for Austrian football. Peter Schoettel, OEFB Sporting Director, praised his professionalism, calmness, and reliability. He noted that Manninger set high standards and inspired many young goalkeepers.
Salzburg police confirmed the tragic incident occurred around 8:20 am local time on Thursday. The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was rescued by first responders but could not be revived. According to preliminary investigations, the car was hit by a railcar from the Salzburger Lokalbahn while crossing the railway. The train driver was unharmed.
Clubs and fans have responded with tributes and memorials. Fiorentina announced plans to observe a minute’s silence and wear black armbands during their home Conference League match against Crystal Palace. Arsenal expressed its shock on social media, offering condolences to Manninger’s family and loved ones.
“Every thought is with his family and loved ones at this incredibly sad time,” Arsenal stated.
Liverpool reflected on Manninger’s final season with the club, noting that he arrived at Anfield in July 2016 to conclude his playing career. “Brought in as an experienced back-up goalkeeper, he featured in two friendly fixtures and was named in the match day squad on four occasions during that campaign,” the club said.
Juventus also shared its grief, calling it a “very sad day” for the club. They described Manninger as not just a great athlete but a man of rare values—humility, dedication, and professionalism. “Alex Manninger will be remembered for the example he set, on and off the pitch. Juventus expresses its deepest condolences and stands close to his family in this moment of grief,” the statement concluded.
