From the Screen to the Senate: Evanne Ní Chuilinn’s Political Pivot
It’s not every day a familiar face from the national broadcaster trades the studio for the halls of power, but that’s precisely the path Kilkenny native Evanne Ní Chuilinn has forged. After a distinguished tenure as a sports presenter with RTÉ, Ní Chuilinn made a significant career shift in February of last year, stepping away from her role at the State broadcaster to embark on a new chapter in politics as a Fine Gael senator.
Her unexpected journey into the political arena is a central theme in the upcoming TG4 program, Rothaí an tSaoil. In a candid conversation with host Áine Ní Bhreisleáin, Ní Chuilinn opens up about the surprising turns her life has taken and her transition from public service broadcasting to public service in a different capacity.
“No, I never imagined that,” Ní Chuilinn admits when reflecting on the possibility of a political career while working at RTÉ. “I never realised that could happen, and at the same time, it is such an honour.” She highlights the significance of the nomination, describing it as “very important” and a “huge honour.” Having spent years in the public eye as a journalist, reporter, and presenter, Ní Chuilinn felt she already possessed a foundational understanding of public affairs and the responsibilities that come with working on behalf of the community. “It was public service broadcasting, so I had an understanding of social affairs and working on behalf of the public,” she explains.
The decision to accept the Fine Gael nomination wasn’t solely her own. Ní Chuilinn reveals that it was her husband, Jamie, who played a crucial role in encouraging her to take the leap. She expressed her genuine happiness that it was Fine Gael who reached out to her, underscoring the personal connection and conviction behind her choice.

Balancing a demanding political career with family life is no small feat, especially for a mother of three. Ní Chuilinn, who is mum to 13-year-old Séimi, 10-year-old Peigi, and three-year-old Teidí, candidly shares that her home life can be so hectic that arriving at Leinster House, the seat of the Irish Parliament, sometimes feels like a welcome respite. “My day begins long before the Seanad,” she confides. “I have three kids, and the youngest gets up very early.” This daily juggle highlights the multifaceted demands on her time and energy.
Ní Chuilinn’s foray into politics was also driven by a broader aspiration: to see more women represented in political spheres. This desire to foster greater female participation was a significant motivating factor in her decision to enter the political arena.
Rothaí an tSaoil promises to offer viewers an intimate glimpse into the lives of individuals who have navigated significant milestones. Through engaging conversations and personal reflections, host Áine Ní Bhreisleáin explores stories of challenges overcome, losses endured, and triumphs celebrated. Evanne Ní Chuilinn’s narrative is a compelling addition to this exploration of life’s pivotal moments.
The episode featuring Evanne Ní Chuilinn will air on TG4 on February 19th at 8 pm.
