Chaka Khan Reflects on a Legendary Career and Nears the Finish Line
The Queen of Funk, Chaka Khan, recently marked her 73rd birthday, and in doing so, offered a candid glimpse into her thoughts on retirement after an extraordinary five-decade career. Despite the immense success and enduring legacy, Khan hinted that the stage might not be her home forever, though the passion for her craft remains as potent as ever.
“They’ll kill me before they let me stop singing!” Khan quipped to Harper’s Bazaar UK earlier this month, a statement that underscores her deep connection to her music and her audience. She continued, “But I know now, this is what I am, this is what God put me here for, and I’m just going to just do it until it’s over.”
For the Grammy-winning powerhouse, born Yvette Marie Stevens, reflecting on her journey often leads to a sense of disbelief. “I can’t believe it’s me,” she admitted, still finding joy and inspiration in her work. “I’m still excited about what I do. It still moves me. When you know there are all these people out there waiting to hear you sing, it’s a special thing.”
Her birthday was met with a wave of well-wishes from a star-studded constellation of colleagues. Pop icon Cyndi Lauper sent a flurry of cake and balloon emojis, while Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson echoed the sentiment, adding a crown and hearts to her celebratory message.

The tributes continued to pour in. Roberta Flack’s official Instagram account shared a warm greeting from her team, stating, “Happy birthday, @chakakhan, from Roberta’s team.” Fellow music legends also chimed in, with two-time Grammy winner Patti LaBelle commenting, “Happy blessed birthday, Chaka!” and seven-time Grammy winner Gladys Knight sending a heartfelt “Happy birthday sister!”
Beyond the music, Khan also shared her insights on personal grooming and well-being. When discussing cosmetic surgery on the Table Manners podcast, she revealed a preference for natural methods. “I’ve never been cut, never been snitched or snatched. I don’t believe in it,” she stated. Her secret to maintaining her radiant appearance? “What I do, you gotta grease [your face]. Got to oil that face up before you go to bed. There’s some good oils. You can use anything from baby oil to your favorite lotion that’s got some like some girth to it. Just pop that s*** on and go to sleep.”
Khan’s life has been marked by both triumphs and battles. In 2016, she bravely entered rehabilitation to address prescription medication and alcohol dependency. Her past struggles with heroin and cocaine addiction were also significant hurdles she has overcome. Reflecting on these difficult periods, she told Harper’s Bazaar, “There were times when I thought, will I make it? Will I live through this? I went through all this stuff – drugs and the whole nine yards – so I’m just happy that I made it.”
Currently, the iconic “Ain’t Nobody” hitmaker is actively involved in promoting a new musical biopic, I’m Every Woman: The Chaka Khan Musical. Directed by Racky Plews, the production is currently touring the UK, with upcoming dates at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry from April 1st to 4th.

For the musical’s portrayal of her life, Khan personally selected pop star Alexandra Burke to play her. “At first, it was difficult to find a girl to play me who was wild enough,” Khan explained. “I’m happy we found Alexandra because she’s someone who can let everything go and just be. I told her, ‘Free yourself up, baby. Relax, open your mouth and sing.’ And she did exactly that.”
Looking ahead, Khan is also set to embark on a national tour throughout May. Her performances will kick off with a concert at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, LA, on May 7th. Despite the whispers of retirement, her presence on streaming platforms remains strong, with 6.8 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Throughout her illustrious career, Chaka Khan has achieved monumental success. Her funk band Rufus sold 3.5 million records, and as a solo artist, she has sold an astounding 70 million records worldwide. While she hasn’t released a new song since “Immortal Queen” with Sia in 2024, and her last full album, Hello Happiness, came out in 2019, her discography is filled with timeless hits. Fans continue to cherish her iconic tracks, including “Tell Me Something Good,” “Sweet Thing,” “I Feel for You,” “Through the Fire,” and “Higher Love.”
Her significant contributions to music have been recognised with prestigious accolades. Khan was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, cementing her place as a true legend.
On a personal note, Chaka Khan is a proud mother of two: daughter Indira Milini Khan, 52, and son Damien Holland, 47. She had her children with babydaddy Rahsaan Morris and her second ex-husband Richard Holland.
