Galway United Stages a Remarkable Comeback Against Drogheda United
Galway United delivered an astonishing Easter weekend performance as they overturned a two-goal deficit to defeat Drogheda United at Sullivan & Lambe Park. The result was nothing short of miraculous, especially after the first 20 minutes saw Drogheda dominate with ease.
Drogheda started strongly and deservedly took the lead within the opening 18 minutes. Mark Doyle opened the scoring in the third minute by converting a corner from Brandon Kavanagh. Just moments later, another corner from Kavanagh led to a second goal for Drogheda. Conor Keeley’s header struck the post, and Jago Godden capitalized on the rebound to double their advantage.
Despite Francely Lomboto’s impressive long-range strike that reduced the deficit, Drogheda maintained control of the game. Their superior possession and forward threats made it look like they would hold onto their lead. However, a crucial moment came when Galway manager John Caulfield made a bold double substitution in the second half.

Kris Twardek and Axel Piesold entered the match on 60 minutes, and it didn’t take long for them to change the course of the game. Twardek immediately made an impact, scoring a stunning lob over the goalkeeper to equalize just a minute later. Seven minutes after that, Piesold sealed the victory with a well-timed low shot into the far bottom corner, assisted by Twardek’s cross.
The decision to make these substitutions proved to be a masterstroke. Kevin Doherty had chosen not to make any changes from the team that drew 0-0 against Bohemians on Friday night. Notably absent was Shane Farrell, who had collapsed during the previous match. On the other hand, Galway made six changes to their starting XI, including the return of Frantz Pierrot, who had previously played a key role in keeping Galway in the top flight.
Pierrot’s return was particularly significant, as he had previously scored twice in a crucial playoff match against Bray. His presence in the lineup added an extra dimension to Galway’s attack.
Throughout the first half, Drogheda looked more composed and dangerous. Godden was denied a second goal after a powerful volley, and Doyle missed a clear header. These missed opportunities would haunt Drogheda in the final stages of the game.
