Gary Lineker spots ‘panic signal’ in Arsenal’s response to Southampton loss

Arsenal’s Unprecedented Challenges

Arsenal has faced a series of unexpected setbacks in recent weeks, raising questions about their ability to maintain their dominance in the Premier League and pursue an unprecedented quadruple. The Gunners’ shocking defeat to Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals was a major blow, as they were beaten 2-1 by the Championship side. Shea Charles scored a dramatic winner five minutes from time, securing a spot in the semi-finals against the odds.

This loss marked Arsenal’s second consecutive defeat, following their loss in the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City before the international break. Their dreams of an unprecedented quadruple have now been crushed, adding pressure on manager Mikel Arteta and his squad.

A Signal of Panic?

Former Tottenham and Barcelona striker Gary Lineker has suggested that the mass withdrawal of Arsenal players from international football last week was a “signal of panic.” After their loss to City, 11 members of the Gunners’ squad withdrew from international duty, including Gabriel Magalhaes and Martin Odegaard, who recovered in time to start against Southampton.

Lineker believes the withdrawals were a sign of worry from both Arteta and the players. He said:

“Southampton played exceptionally well and Arsenal were off it. It’s obviously easier in hindsight after they’ve lost, but I thought there was a slight signal of panic at Arsenal after the City game when they withdrew so many players, or the players themselves withdrew from the international games they were about to play.”

He also questioned whether the decision to withdraw was wise, suggesting that letting the players play international football might have been beneficial.

A Different Perspective

However, Lineker’s co-host Alan Shearer took a more understanding approach. He believed the Gunners’ worries should focus on their performance on the south coast rather than the withdrawals. Shearer said:

“I totally understand why they all pulled out because they are on the brink of history, Arsenal. And still could be. I think that’s really important to say because they are still in the two main competitions.”

He acknowledged that some players had genuine injuries, such as Saka and Declan Rice, but argued that the team still had enough quality to beat Southampton. He pointed out that Southampton wanted the win more, which was a worrying sign for Arsenal.

Pressure and Performance

The back-to-back defeats are the first real signs that the pressure is getting to this Arsenal side, as they hunt down their first trophy in six years. Despite these setbacks, they remain comfortably in the box seat for the Premier League title, sitting nine points clear of second-placed City. They are also in the last eight of the Champions League.

Looking Ahead

“It’s been a tough two weeks for Arsenal,” Lineker said. “People are asking if they’re panicking or if it’s a crisis, it’s definitely a little wobble.”

He highlighted concerns over Gabriel’s injury, noting that he will be a big miss if he’s out. The next game or two are crucial for Arsenal, as they need to steady the ship.

Despite the challenges, Lineker remains confident that Arsenal will win the league. He added:

“I’m pretty confident they will win the league. It’s not a bad situation to be in, nine points clear at the top of the Premier League and in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.”
