Geelong Coach Chris Scott Shares Updates on Key Players’ Returns

Geelong coach Chris Scott has shared positive news regarding the return-to-play timelines of several key players, including Tyson Stengle, Jack Bowes, Jhye Clark, and Jake Kolodjashnij. These updates come as the team prepares for their upcoming matches, with a focus on ensuring the players are fully fit before returning to action.

Tyson Stengle’s Progress

Stengle, a 27-year-old player, has been following an individual program after taking personal leave in December. Scott described his progress as “really positive,” noting that Stengle is following a similar cautious approach to other players who have returned from injury. He compared the process to the slow and careful returns of Patrick Dangerfield and Jake Kolodjashnij.

“Tyson hasn’t played VFL footy yet, but he has put together a really strong block of training,” Scott said. “It is still very likely that we will wait a bit before we thrust him into an AFL game.”

Scott added that it is likely Stengle will play some VFL footy before making his return to the AFL. He also mentioned that there are plans to have Stengle participate in VFL games this week, which could serve as a guide for his timeline.

With a league-wide VFL bye next week, the Cats will face Footscray in two weeks. This gives the team more time to assess Stengle’s readiness before making any decisions about his return.

Jack Bowes’ Potential Return

Scott also provided an update on Jack Bowes, hinting at a possible return to the team. “I think that is likely,” he said. “As you know, I am not going to walk you through our team, but I am happy to say that Jack is one of those guys.”

Bowes was almost a victim of circumstance in the Round 2 game against Adelaide, where the incumbents were chosen despite his strong form. He missed a couple of games due to a minor calf issue but is now fit and ready to return.

“It is really positive to get him back into our team in good form,” Scott said. His return would be a significant boost for the team as they continue their season.

Jhye Clark’s Positional Development

Scott also highlighted the importance of getting Jhye Clark into his preferred midfield position. Clark has spent time in the early part of his AFL career in different roles, but the coaching staff is now focusing on helping him find his place in the midfield.

“This is important for his development and for the team’s overall strategy,” Scott said. The goal is to ensure Clark is in the best position to contribute effectively when he returns to the field.

Jake Kolodjashnij’s Recovery

Jake Kolodjashnij, who has been sidelined since the finals series last year due to hip and groin issues, is expected to return to the field in the coming weeks. Scott emphasized a cautious approach, stating that Kolodjashnij has likely met the criteria for his return to play.

“It is likely that he has served his return to play criteria, and now he is absolutely in a position where we will play him over the next few weeks,” Scott said. However, he noted that the team will not rush him back into regular gameplay.

“We have got the macro plan, which is obviously subject to change based on circumstance,” Scott explained. “We have been careful with him, and we are optimistic that he is through the physical issues that he has had. There just has to be enough flex in there that if he does get a bit sore, that we don’t keep pushing him through.”

Scott concluded by expressing confidence that Kolodjashnij will play a part in the upcoming fixtures, even though the team will take a measured approach to his return.
