Get Your Face in a PS5 Game by Telling Sony You Love Them

A New PlayStation Initiative for Fans

Sony has launched an unusual new project that allows PlayStation fans to be scanned into a video game. However, this opportunity is not available to everyone; it requires proving one’s dedication to the brand first.

Although PlayStation’s 30th anniversary was in 2024, Sony is still capitalizing on the celebrations by introducing a new initiative called The Playerbase. This project aims to integrate its most devoted fans into its games, starting with Gran Turismo 7.

At first glance, this might seem like a harmless way to engage with the gaming community. However, given the current era of deepfakes and actors licensing their likenesses to AI companies, there are some concerns about the implications of such a project.

To participate, interested individuals must go through a two-stage process. First, they need to submit an application via the Playerbase website. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have a PlayStation account ID. They will also need to provide basic information and answer a question about how PlayStation has impacted their life.

According to the PlayStation Blog, only a limited number of applicants will be selected to move on to the next stage, which involves video interviews. These interviews aim to learn more about the applicants and their connection to PlayStation.

The evaluation criteria for the interview process include:

  • Demonstrating an authentic love for PlayStation
  • Showing a genuine passion for Gran Turismo 7
  • Providing shareable and entertaining content while showcasing an interesting story that can be used for further compelling content

This process seems to suggest that Sony is looking for emotional content that can be used for social media engagement.

The main prize for winning this competition is a limited-time appearance in Gran Turismo 7 as an in-game character portrait. Essentially, participants are being asked to worship at PlayStation’s altar just to become a static JPEG for a short period.

However, the winner will also have a long-term impact on the game. They will be able to design a custom Fantasy logo and a vehicle livery that will be permanently added to the Showcase menu. Additionally, the winner will receive a paid trip to a visual arts studio in Los Angeles.

As mentioned in the Q&A, the winner will be announced in summer 2026, with their likeness appearing in a Gran Turismo 7 update later this year.

Sony has not yet specified which other games will use the Playerbase initiative. However, the company plans to incorporate fans into future titles using a similar format. It remains to be seen if this will lead to more interactive experiences, such as potentially becoming Mimir’s disembodied head in God Of War Ragnarök.
