Gina Schumacher Breaks Silence on Life After Dad’s Tragedy

The Journey of Gina Schumacher After Her Father’s Tragic Accident

Michael Schumacher, the legendary Formula One driver, has been out of the public eye since a skiing accident in 2013 left him with severe brain injuries. His daughter, Gina-Maria Bethke, has recently opened up about how this event affected her life and how she found solace in one of her passions—horses.

The accident occurred during a family skiing holiday in Meribel, France. Schumacher suffered a fractured skull and traumatic brain injury, leading to a coma that lasted nearly six months. Since then, his condition has remained largely private, with only a small circle of close family and caregivers involved in his care.

Recent reports suggest that Schumacher is now able to sit up in a wheelchair and move around his luxurious properties in Majorca and Gland, on the shores of Lake Geneva. He is supported by Corinna, his wife of 30 years, along with a team of medical professionals who provide round-the-clock care.

Gina, now 29, has spoken about how the tragedy impacted her deeply. She revealed that she turned to horses as a way to cope with the emotional turmoil.

Horses as a Source of Strength

In an upcoming documentary titled Horsepower – The World of Gina Schumacher, Gina shared how her love for horses became a vital part of her healing process.

“The horses have always been important. But since then they’ve really been… I mean, I couldn’t do without horses. They helped me get through everything,” she said.

Gina’s connection to horses was influenced by her mother, Corinna, who had a horse when she was younger. As a child, Gina would often visit the stables, and this bond deepened over time.

“Mom used to have a horse, and when we were younger, she wanted to start again. But she wanted a safe horse. Then she was in Dubai with Dad, and they rode Arabians. Dad fell off one. There was a Quarter Horse next to it, and he was there to calm the others down. And then Mum said she wanted a horse like that.”

Gina expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with horses, emphasizing the importance of hard work and dedication.

“My parents made it possible. That’s why it’s always been important to me to work hard in this area, so that I can do it as well as I possibly can.”

A Family Legacy

Corinna shared a touching memory from when Gina was ten years old. Michael once told her, “Gina will be much better than you.” He explained, “Because she’s more selfish. If you’re an athlete, you have to be selfish in a certain way. And that’s great. Otherwise, you won’t amount to anything.”

Today, Corinna reflects on these words, saying, “I think he was so right.”

Gina and her husband, Iain Bethke, married in September 2024 at the family’s luxury villa in Majorca. The couple bought the property for £27 million in 2017. While it was speculated that Michael might have attended the wedding, this was later disputed.

Recent Developments and Speculation

Last April, Gina gave birth to her first child, adding another chapter to her personal story. Despite the challenges, she continues to thrive in the world of equestrian sports, carrying forward the legacy of her father.

There have been various rumors about Michael’s condition, including speculation that he may suffer from pseudocoma or locked-in syndrome. However, sources close to the family have refuted these claims.

“It’s felt that he understands some of the things going on around him, but probably not all of them,” one source said.

As the Schumacher family continues to navigate life after the accident, Gina remains a symbol of resilience and strength, finding comfort and purpose in her passion for horses.
