Gladiators’ BBC Slot Axed in Major Schedule Shake-Up

Gladiators Schedule Shake-Up: Major Changes Impacting Family Viewing

A significant shift in the broadcast schedule for one of the BBC’s most popular and action-packed programs, Gladiators, is set to cause a stir, particularly for families with young fans. The reboot, which has enjoyed a phenomenal resurgence in popularity since its 2024 launch, consistently drawing between five and eight million viewers per episode, is moving from its usual 5:45 pm slot.

The core appeal of Gladiators lies in its straightforward yet thrilling premise: everyday individuals go head-to-head with elite athletes in a series of gruelling, high-octane challenges. This dynamic has captivated audiences, making it a weekend staple for many.

However, viewers tuning in over the next two weekends will need to adjust their viewing habits. The show will no longer air at its customary time.

  • February 14th: If the preceding football match concludes within its standard 90 minutes, Gladiators will commence at 8:00 pm.
  • February 21st: The broadcast time will shift to 7:15 pm.

These altered timings present a challenge for parents who may not want their children staying up past 8:00 pm to catch the full 60-minute episode. The timing of this schedule change is particularly noteworthy, as it coincides with a critical juncture in the current series. Episode five marks the conclusion of the show’s heat rounds, with episode six ushering in the all-important quarter-finals, a stage where the competition intensifies significantly.

It’s not just Gladiators that is feeling the ripple effect of live football broadcasts. Other BBC staples, including Morning Live and BBC Breakfast, have also experienced adjustments to their respective schedules.

Alternative Viewing Options for Younger Audiences

For parents concerned about their children’s viewing times, there is a convenient alternative. The show will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer from 4:00 pm on the day of its release. This allows younger fans to watch the episode at a more suitable hour without the need to stay up late for the broadcast.

Injury Scare: A Gladiator Sidelined

Adding to the recent news surrounding the show, one of the formidable Gladiators, Legend (portrayed by Matt Morsia), has unfortunately sustained a significant injury. Morsia revealed over the weekend that he suffered a bicep tendon tear during training, necessitating his temporary withdrawal from the competition.

“Unfortunately, I’ve damaged my bicep tendon and I’m going to be out for a little while,” Morsia shared, expressing his disappointment. “I’ll be honest, I’m pretty devastated. Devastated for you guys because everyone knows you literally only come here to see me. It is obviously very frustrating not being able to take part in the events, mainly because we did testing this morning and even with one arm I’m still easily the strongest Gladiator.”

Despite Legend’s temporary absence, the remaining Gladiators are ready to bring the action. Viewers can still expect to see an impressive lineup of athletic prowess from Apollo, Athena, Bionic, Comet, Cyclone, Diamond, Giant, Dynamite, Electro, Fire, Hammer, Nitro, Phantom, Sabre, Steel, and Viper.

The original iteration of Gladiators first graced screens on ITV between 1992 and 2000. While it saw a brief revival on Sky in 2009, the current BBC production is widely considered its most successful and impactful incarnation in recent times. For those wishing to revisit past glories or catch up on missed episodes, previous seasons of Gladiators are also available for streaming on BBC iPlayer.
