The Rise of Screen-Free Fitness Trackers
In the ever-evolving world of wearable technology, a new trend is emerging that could shake up the fitness tracking market. Following Garmin’s recent accidental leak about its upcoming Whoop competitor, the Garmin Cirqa, it now appears that Google’s Fitbit division is preparing to enter the screen-free fitness tracker arena as well.
A promotional video shared by NBA legend and Google performance advisor Steph Curry has sparked curiosity about what’s coming next. In the video, Curry can be seen wearing an orange wristband with a metal clasp, which bears a striking resemblance to the Whoop device. While the details of the device remain unclear, Google has hinted that it will be released soon. “I’m excited about what this is going to mean for the world, for health and wellness,” Curry says in a voiceover. “It’s the first of its kind in a way. I won’t spoil it, you kinda have to see it for yourself.”
Although we don’t yet know whether this new device will be a Pixel product or a Fitbit band, it is part of a growing trend of screen-free trackers. Over the past year, several companies have introduced similar devices, building on the popularity of smart rings from brands like Oura, Samsung, and Ultrahuman.
A Brief History of Screen-Free Trackers
Fitbit has dabbled in screen-free wearables before. In 2013, before the company was acquired by Google, it launched the Fitbit Flex, a device with no display. The Fitbit Flex featured five LED lights that lit up as users approached their daily goals. This design was later updated with the Fitbit Flex 2 in 2016, which included coloured LED lights to indicate incoming calls and track fitness progress. It was also the first swim-proof Fitbit and could automatically track workouts.
The Fitbit Flex line was eventually discontinued in 2019, replaced by the Fitbit Aspire, a more budget-friendly tracker with a screen. However, it seems that the concept of screen-free wearables is making a comeback. With Garmin set to launch its Whoop rival and now Google entering the space, the future of health and wellness tracking may be moving towards a distraction-free design.
Current Options in the Market
For those looking for affordable fitness trackers, the Fitbit Inspire 3 is a popular choice. According to Zoe Griffin, a fitness writer, the device offers a range of features including tracking 20 different sports, step count, heart rate, and calories from the wrist. One of its standout features is the smart wake technology, which vibrates to wake users during a light-sleep stage rather than a deep one, up to 30 minutes before the alarm is set. This feature helps users feel more refreshed and alert when they wake up.
Currently, customers can save 31% on the Fitbit Inspire 3 at Amazon. The device is available for £59 on Amazon.co.uk.
