Gout Gout Shatters Under-20 World Record in Stunning Run

Gout Shatters Records in Spectacular 200m Performance

At the national athletics championships held at Sydney Olympic Park, Gout made history by breaking both the Australian 200m record and the world under-20 record. The 18-year-old sprinter clocked an impressive 19.67 seconds, surpassing his previous national record of 20.02 set last year. This performance not only highlights his exceptional talent but also marks a significant milestone in his young career.

In a thrilling race, Aidan Murphy, who finished second to Gout, also broke the Australian record with a time of 19.88 seconds. The wind conditions were favorable, with a legal +1.7 metres per second, which contributed to their outstanding performances.

Gout’s achievement is particularly notable as he managed to beat the world under-20 record previously held by American Erriyon Knighton, who ran 19.69 seconds in 2022. However, Knighton’s time was not ratified due to anti-doping testing issues. Knighton later received a four-year ban for testing positive to a banned drug. Despite this, Gout remains focused on his own journey and future goals.

“It’s been in my mind this whole year [cracking 20 seconds legally], these past couple of months, so glad I got it, for sure,” Gout shared with reporters. He had set a personal goal of 19.75 seconds and was thrilled with his performance of 19.67.

Gout first claimed the Australian 200m record at the national school titles in December 2024, running 20.04 seconds. He then improved this mark to 20.02 at the Czech Republic’s Ostrava Golden Spike meet last year. His latest achievement solidifies his position as one of Australia’s most promising sprinters.

Gout will not be competing at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games this year, choosing instead to focus on the world under-20 championships in Eugene, Oregon. His sights are set on winning gold in the 200m during his final appearance at the world under-20 championships. “Running at the senior world champs [in Tokyo last year], that was the type of stuff for me and this year [is about] me being out of high school competing against the big men, just going out there and doing my thing up against them,” he explained.

Murphy, who is 22 years old, has also made a name for himself in the sprinting community. His personal best of 20.41 seconds was surpassed in this race. Murphy is the son of Tania Van Heer, a bronze medallist in the women’s 100m at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

Earlier in the day, another highly anticipated showdown between Gout and fellow Queensland sprint sensation Lachlan Kennedy did not take place when Kennedy pulled out after winning the 100m title in 9.96 seconds on Saturday night.

Gout is set to compete in a series of races across Europe and the US this year, including a 200m event at the prestigious Prefontaine Classic in Eugene in early July.

Other Notable Performances

In addition to Gout’s remarkable performance, several other athletes delivered standout results at the championships. Peter Bol secured his fifth national 800m title with a time of 1:45.60. Rising star Daniel Williams, 18, led the final lap but was overtaken by Bol, who held off a strong challenge from Luke Boyes, the 2024 national champion.

Abbey Caldwell showcased her strength in the women’s 800m, finishing ahead of Claudia Hollingsworth with a time of 1:58.57. Hollingsworth took second place with a time of 1:58.91, while Sarah Billings came in third with a time of 1:59.23.

Other notable results included Michelle Jenneke winning the women’s 100m hurdles final in 12.74 seconds, Nicola Olyslagers claiming the women’s high jump title with a 1.99m jump, and Jess Hull securing victory in the women’s 5000m final with a time of 15:13.21.
