Haaland Confident in Title Race Despite Girlfriend’s Dislike of His Scars

A Physical and Mental Battle on the Pitch

Erling Haaland made his presence known in a game that was as much about physicality as it was about skill. His white Puma boots, marked with the number nine in black marker pen, were a stark visual. On his right foot, a visible scar told a story of past battles, one that is all too common for a striker in the Premier League.

The scar, a red mark on the bridge of his foot, looked painful, as if it had been burned by a stud from an opponent’s boot. This is a regular occurrence in football, where players are occasionally stood on or injured due to the intensity of the game. But for Haaland, the real damage came not from the boots but from the body of Gabriel, one of the most robust defenders in the league.

‘A lot of scratches,’ Haaland said with a grin. ‘Sometimes my missus is not so happy about this, it looks a bit wrong! But that’s the reality.’

Dominance in Aerial Duels

Haaland’s performance in aerial duels was nothing short of impressive. He won 75 per cent of them, a statistic that highlights his dominance in the air. Gabriel, who lost three of his five duels, found himself outmatched on several occasions. This particular battle between the two players has become a defining feature of their rivalry, and this time, Haaland emerged victorious.

The tension between the two players reached its peak when Gabriel attempted to push his forehead into Haaland late in the game. Like many of their previous encounters, Gabriel missed, and Haaland noted that he was booked for his involvement in the incident. He also laughed at the fact that referee Anthony Taylor did not award a free kick when Gabriel tore strips off his jersey.

Resilience and Strategy

Underneath the skin of Gabriel, there were red blemishes that spoke of a player who endured goading and hassle during the match. Haaland, known for his ability to mimic his opponents, used a mix of words and actions to provoke a reaction. However, he remained composed, showing the resilience that has come to define his career.

Haaland admitted that the situation could have warranted a red card, and that it might have been easier to fall to the ground. However, he recalled the advice from his father, Alfie, who taught him to stay on his feet. The 25-year-old hinted that his family would have used strong language to describe him had he gone down.

A New Lease of Life

The match also highlighted Haaland’s return to form after a period of struggle. His recent break from club action, which included sitting out a friendly and visiting Dr Ramon Cugat in Barcelona, allowed him to focus on recovery. This time away from the pitch has helped him prepare for what he calls the most important two months of his career, leading up to the World Cup.

‘I’m really happy the national team helped me and said, “you know what, relax” after playing 50 games this season,’ Haaland said. ‘And to get ready for the most important two months of my career with the World Cup as well. I’m happy they let me relax and fix my body a little bit and then come back to attack.’

Staying Calm Under Pressure

Haaland’s return to proper form comes at a crucial moment for Manchester City. With the team top of the table, the upcoming match against Burnley will be vital in their quest for the title. The success of this campaign will depend on the experienced coaching staff guiding the younger players through challenging moments.

‘After West Ham (last month), everybody wrote that it was over,’ Haaland said. ‘That was the feeling. There are a few of us who have been in this situation before. A few new… a lot new (players)!

‘It’s like when I came to the club, I learned a lot from the old players like John (Stones) and Ederson, Riyad (Mahrez), the way they behaved when it came to a decisive moment.

‘You need to stay calm and focus on what you can do. Stay calm, not think too much – which is the most difficult thing, because it gets heated at times and before the Arsenal game there was a lot of talk.’

Looking Ahead

As the season progresses, the talk surrounding the teams will only intensify. Haaland, who watched Arsenal’s recent defeat by Bournemouth, urged his City teammates to remain humble.

‘Over the last seasons they (Arsenal) have come up short,’ he added. ‘For now they are first and they are still there, they’ve been the best team of the season. I don’t want to speak too much about them because they are an amazing team.’

Yet by highlighting Arsenal’s past struggles, Haaland subtly conveyed his belief that the opportunity is there. He smells blood, and not just from his own wounds.
